二语习得第1页共2页MyViewonthe‘DumbEnglish’Currently,Englishisthemostwidelyusedlanguageintheworld,whichplaysanimportantroleintheinternationalaffairsanddailylife.Sofar,learningEnglishhasbecomethemostpopularthinginChina.But,howabouttheeffect?Infact,thephenomenonofDumbEnglishcanbeseenhereandthere.‘DumbEnglish’referstothosewhohaslearnedEnglish,buttheyjustcouldreadandwriteinsteadofcommunicatinginEnglish.Inmyopinions,therearemanyfactorsthataccountsfortheDumbEnglish.ProbablyoneofthemainfactorsistheeffectsofL1transfer.Anyonewholearnsaforeignlanguagecannotgetridofthethinkingofhismothertongue.Also,howcanwelearnEnglishwellinsuchasurroundingthatfilledwithChinese?Thedifficultyisself-evident.Anotherfactorsistheeffectsofexamination-orientededucation.BasedonthepresentsituationofEnglisheducationinChina,especiallyinthefieldofmiddleschoolEnglishteaching,theteachingmaterialaswellastheteachingmethodaredesignedfortheexamination.So,forstudents,theonlythingneededtodoisgettingintotheexercises.Asaresult,theyarenotabletocommunicateinEnglish,eventhoughtheyhavelearneditforseveralyears.Besides,anotherfactors,suchasthemotivationsandinterest,allgiverisetotheDumbEnglish.ThephenomenonofDumbEnglishissopopularthattheproblemhowtoovercomeithasarisen.Asforme,therearesomemeasures:Firstofall,reformingtheeducationsystem,thatisthetransitionfromexamination-orientededucationtoqualityeducation.Especially,inEnglishlearning,priorityshouldbegiventolisteningandspeakinginteachingComprehensiveReadinginsteadofgettinghighmarks.OnlyinthiswaycanwegetridoftheDumbEnglish.二语习得第2页共2页Inaddition,theintegrationofcultureintoEnglishteaching.Language,essentially,isakindofculture.So,inEnglishlearning,weshouldnotoverlookthepowerofculture,especialthecultureandcustomsofEnglish-speakingcountries.Actually,theintegrationofcultureintoEnglishteachingcanhelpstudentstosurmounttheobstacleincross-culturalcommunicationanddevelopstudents’cross-culturalcommunicationabilitiesaswellasimprovethelevelofEnglishteaching.Moreover,inthissituation,cultureshockcanbeavoidedandstudents’sensitivitytothesubtledifferencesbetweenthetwoculturescanbewelldeveloped.Lastly,emphasizingtheimportanceofcommunicationinEnglishlearning.English,asatoolforcommunicatingwithpeople,wecannotemphasizetheimportanceofcommunicationtoomuch.However,thetraditionaloralEnglishclassesareusuallyorganizedthroughquestionsandanswers.Mostofthetime,studentsarefocusedtoanswer.Inthissituation,howcanstudentsgetintothehabitofcommunicatinginEnglish?Therefore,Ithink,teachersshouldtakesomeflexibleteachingmethodstoreducethepsychologicalbarrierofstudents.Suchas,Englishcorner,role-playsandEnglishlectures.Onlyinaequal,friendly,harmoniousandopenatmosphere,canstudentsgetsufficienttrainingopportunitiesandactivelyparticipateincommunication.Withtheacceleratingpaceofglobalization,overcomingthedumbEnglishhasincreasinglybecomethemostimportantandthefirstworkinourEnglisheducation.Teachersandstudentsmustproceedfromtheiractualconditionsandtakeeffectivemeasurestogetridofit.
