InterculturalcommunicationByZhangXuemeiStudentNO.:201205440228Class:2012.2ChoosingSubject:InterculturalCommunicationCourseName:BusinessKnowledgeCourseJune2014Abstract：Interculturalcommunicationisthecommunicationsamongpeoplefromdifferentculturebackgrounds.Cultureisconcludingeverythingineverywhere.Itisthedepositofknowledge,experiences,beliefs,values,actionsattitudes,meanings,hierarchies’religion,nationsoftime,role,spatialrelations,conceptsoftheuniverseandartifactsacquiredbyagroupofpeopleincourseofgenerationsthroughindividualandgroupstriving.Itisomnipresentmultidimensionalandallpervasive.Peoplefromdifferentculturebackgroundlivefarawayfromeachotherforquitealongtimesothatitiscommonforthemtodevelopdifferentlifestyles,differentideasontheworldviewsandvalues,differentabilitiestoadapttolifeindifferentenvironments,andformedsocalled“culture“indifferentregionsandareasintheworld.Therefore,whentheycommunicating,onegroupofpeoplemaybeaffectedbyanothergroupofpeople’swords,andfeeluncomfortable,puzzled,surprised,orevenshocked.Communicationwithpeoplefromdifferentculturescanbefascinationorfrustratingbecauseofthesedifferences.Theconflictionjustcouldn’tbeavoidedinglobalinteractions.Thenecessityofinterculturalcommunication:PeoplecannotlivewithoutCommunication.Communicationiseverywhere.Evenwhentheyarealone,peoplearebombardedwithcommunication.Humancommunication—thatis,theabilitytouselanguage,theabilitytoexchangeideaswithpeoplearoundusindifferentcultures.Communicationwithothersistheessenceofwhatitmeanstobehuman.Communicationwhichisveryimportanttoourhumansisthevehiclebywhichpeopleinitiate,maintain,andterminatetheirrelationshipswithothers.Likecommunication,cultureisprevalenceandhasaprofoundeffectonhumans.Cultureisalsoinvisibleyetpervasive.Aswegoaboutourdailylives,wedonothaveagreatsenseofourculture’sinfluence.Cultureexisteverywherearoundusbetweendifferentnationsevendifferentcountries.Culturehasadirectinfluenceonthephysical,relationalandperceptualenvironment.Yetmostofourthoughts,emotions,andbehaviorsareprofoundlyaffectedbydifferentcultures.Inadditiontotherapidgrowthofmodernsociety,Peoplehavemoreandmoreexchanges;theimportanceofinterculturalcommunicationisbecomingmoreimportant.Interculturalcommunicationoccurswheneveraminimumoftwopersonsfromdifferentculturesorcountriescometogetherandexchangeverbalandnonverbalsymbols.Itcanoccureverywhere.Forexample,whenwedobusinesswithpeoplefromdifferentculturesordifferentcountries,weneedtocommunicatewiththem;weneedexchangedifferentviewsaboutthebusinessonthematterofinformation.Asweallknown,interculturalcommunicationisindispensable.Successfullycommunicatingwithsomeonefromadifferentcultureordifferentcountrieswhichisverydifficulttoourhumanrequiresadegreeofcommunicationcompetence.Mostmodelsofcommunicationcompetenceincludeanaffectiveandbehavioralcomponent,whichisindispensableincross-culturalcommunication.Withtherapidgrowthofthemodernsociety,thebenefitsoftheInterculturalcommunicationareevengreater.Communicatingandestablishingrelationshipswithpeoplefromdifferentculturescanleadtoawholehostofbenefits,includinghealthiercommunities;increasedinternational,national,andlocalcommerce;reducedconflict;andpersonalgrowththroughincreasedtolerance.Throughopenandhonestinterculturalcommunication,peoplecanworktogethertoachievegoalsthatbenefiteveryone,regardlessofgrouporculture,includingtheglobalcommunityinthehome,business,orneighborhood.Healthycommunitiessupportallcommunitymembersandstrivetounderstand,appreciate,andacknowledgeeachmember.Ourabilitytointeractwithpersonsfromdifferentculturesbroughtusmanybenefits,throughcross-culturalexchange,wecanlearnabouttheothercountries’wayoflife,alsowecanunderstandtheirindustrystructure,thuswecandocommercialexchangesandacademiccommunicationwiththem,theacademichasNoboundaries,onlythroughtheexchange,wecangetmoreacademicknowledge,ourcommunicationwillbeeasierandtherewillbelessconflictbetweenpeopleofdifferentcultures.Whenwecometogetherwithapersonfromadifferentculture,wemayfeeluncertain,apprehensiveandanxious.Suchfeelingsarestressful.Hence,sometimesinterculturalcommunicationcanbestressful.Thegoodnewsisthatwecanlearnandadapttosuchstressand.Duringinterculturalcommunicationwehavetokeepinourmindthatthecommunicationstrategiesweusewithpersonswithwhomwearefamiliarmaynotbeeffectivewithpersonsfromothercultures.Thus,wehavetolearntoadaptandadjustourcommunicationstyle.Wehavetorecognizethatwewillmakemistakes,learnfromthem,adapt,andmoveon.Agoodbeginningpointistorecognizethatpeoplefromdifferentculturesaredifferent—notbetterorworse,butsimplydifferent.Onceweareabletodothis,wecanadjustandadaptoutverbalandnonverbalmessagesaccordinglyandbecomecompetentinteractions.Onlythroughinterculturalcommunicationcanwemakeourcommunicationeasierandourliferichandcolorful.Asweknow,peopleliveindifferentculturehavedifferentvalue,differentbelief,differentsocialnorm.Butculturesarenotstandalone,theyhavesomethingincommon.Fromwhatwelearned,weknowcleareraboutwhatIsay.Weknowbeliefs,values,andnormsthatarestableovertimeandthatleadthemembersofacultur
