TheInternationalJournalOfEngineeringAndScience(IJES)||Volume||3||Issue||8||Pages||23-26||2014||ISSN(e):2319–1813ISSN(p):2319–1805*,VinayBU2,KiranPrakashaA2,PavitraAjagol21,2AssistantProfessor,MechanicalEngineering,SahyadriCollegeofEngineeringandManagement,Mangalore,India.*Email:lawfds85@gmail.com----------------------------------------------------------ABSTRACT-----------------------------------------------------------Inthisstudy,wasteshellfishshell(SS)areusedasbiofiller,whichishavingasignificantodorand,havingitshighcontentofcalciumcarbonate(CaCO3).Theparticlesofshellfishshell(SS)waspreparedfromtheseashellfishshellbycrushing,grindingandshearingemulsification.Shellfishshell(SS)fillerwasintroducedonglassfiberreinforcedpolymermatrixcomposites.ThedifferentvolumepercentageofSSfillerinpolymersuchas0%,5%,10%and15%areused.E-glassreinforcedepoxymatrixfilledwithSSpisfabricatedbyusinghandlay-uptechnique.Theattempthasbeenmadeinthisworktostudythemechanicalpropertieslikeultimatetensilestrength,flexuralstrengthandhardnessofthefabricatedcomposites.KEYWORDS:E-glassfiber(GF),epoxy,mechanicalproperties,shellfishshellparticulates(SSp).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DateofSubmission:17July2014DateofPublication:20August2014--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I.INTRODUCTIONPolymersandtheircompositesaregainingwidescopeinmanyengineeringapplicationssuchasnavelapplications,aerospacestructures,spaceshipstructures,gearsbecauseofhighmodulusandhightoughness,resistancetocorrosion,goodtribologicalpropertiesandsoon[1].Howeverpolymericcompositesaresusceptibletomechanicaldamage,whensubjectedtotension,compressionandflexuralloadsresultingininterlayerdelamination[2].Thusnowadayslotofresearchisgoingtowardsenhancingthemechanicalpropertiesofthecomposites.Worksarereportedmainlyenhancingthepropertiesbyvaryingthefibervolumefraction,orientationandsoon[3].Recentdevelopmentinthisfieldisimprovingmechanicalpropertiesbyaddingsecondaryreinforcementscalledfillers.Incaseofthermosetpolymericmatrices,epoxymatricesaremostwidelyusedasstructuralapplicationsandalsoinotherindustrialapplicationsduetoitshighresistancetocorrosionandchemicals,goodthermal,mechanicalproperties[4,5].Epoxy(E)resinsareincreasinglyusedasmatrixesincompositematerialsinmanyapplications,suchasaerospace,automotive,structureapplication,shipbuildingandelectronicdevices,becauseoftheirlowcreep,goodadhesiontomanysubstratesandhighstrength,lowviscosity,andlowshrinkageduringcuring[6].Thehighperformanceofcontinuousfiber(e.g.carbonfiber,glassfiber)reinforcedpolymermatrixcompositesiswellknownanddocumented[7].Themechanicalpropertiesofamaterialarethosepropertiesthatinvolveareactiontoanappliedload.Themechanicalpropertiesofacompositedeterminetherangeofusefulnessofamaterialandestablishtheservicelifethatcanbeexpected.Thevariationinthepropertiescanbeduetothechangeinthemicrostructureoffiber/fillerandmatrixreinforcement.Fillersincreasestiffness,fracturetoughness,andhightemperatureload-bearingcapability,decreaseshrinkageandimprovetheappearanceofcomposites(8-10).Manyinvestigationshavebeenmadeonthepotentialofthenaturalfibersasreinforcementsforcompositesandinseveralcasestheresulthaveshownthatthenaturalfibercompositesowngoodstiffnessbutthecompositesdonotreachthesamelevelofstrengthastheglassfibercomposite[11].M.Muthuveletal[12]determinedthemechanicalpropertiessuchastensile,impactandflexuraltestofhybridglass/jutefiberreinforcedepoxycompositesintheformsoflaminaandlaminates.Theadoptionofthisdesignallowedforacostreductionof20%andaweightsavingof23%comparedtothecurrentcommercialsolution.ShellfishshellasaBio-filler:Preparation,characterization….[13]developedanepoxybasedhybridizedcompositematerialcomprisingofglassfiber,jutefiberandredmudasfillermaterialandevaluateditsmechanicalpropertiesandobservedthatflexuralstrength,tensilestrengthanddensityofthematerialincreaseswithincreaseinnumberoflayersofreinforcement.BiswasandAlokSatapathy[14]carriedoutastudyonbamboofiberandglassfiberreinforcedepoxymatrixcompositesfilledwithdifferentweightproportionsofredmudandtheirmechanicalpropertiesshowsimprovementbytheadditionofredmud.Erosiontestswerealsocarriedoutanditshowedgoodresultstoproveredmudasapotentialfilleralongwithpolymermatrixcomposites.S.M.Sapuan[15]dealtthetensileandflexuralpropertiesofbananafiberreinforcedwithepoxy.Thestatisticalanalysiscarriedout,showedanincreaseinmechanicalproperties.SrivastavaandWahne[16]organizedasystematicexperimentalstudyandconcludedthatparticulatefillershavethepotentialofimprovingthemechanicalpropertiesandwearresistanceoftheglassfibrereinforcedepoxycomposites.Thisisbecausethefillerinparticlefor
