TheOCDGuideto:TheResume(MBA)Summer2010Version21.Self-AssessandDetermineFocus1.Self-AssessandDetermineFocus2.DevelopResumeandOnlineBrand3.Conductnetworking4.PrepareandInterview5.DecideandNegotiateCareerTrackerSteps2ResumeChecklist:1.UnderstandthekeyskillsandexperiencesyouwanttohighlightTheseskillsandexperienceswillbewhatyoufeelwouldbemostdesirableforapotentialemployer.Theywillbedifferentfordifferentindustriesandfunctions.2.ConstructbulletsintheAction-Context-Result(ACR)formatIfpossible,allbulletsinthe'Experience'sectionshouldbeinACRformatandshouldbetwotothreelinesinlength.Pleaserefertothe'OCDResumeGuide'under“HighlightYourSkills”forfurtherexplanation.3.CreateyourresumeintheiMpactsystemUsetheiMpactsystemtocreateyourresume.RefertotheEnteringYourResumeoniMpactOCDGuidetocreateyourresumeiniMpact.4.ScheduleresumereviewswiththeOfficeofCareerDevelopment(OCD)AftercreatingyourresumeintheiMpactsystem,werecommendschedulingaresumereviewwithacounseloratOCD.5.PublishyourresumeoniMpactPublishingyourresumeenablesittobeviewedbyOCDstaffandcorporaterecruiters.Inordertobeincludedintheresumebook/database,youmustpublishyourDefaultresumebytheannounceddeadlinedate.Recruitersusetheresumebook/databasetoseekpotentialcandidatestointerview.Topublishyourresumeforotherstoseeit,followtheinstructionsintheEnteringyourResumeoniMpactguide.Resources:OCDCareerCounseling(ResumeReviews)VaultandWetFeetresumeguidesavailablethroughKresgeLibraryResumebooksfrompreviousclassesavailableatCareerCenterandKresgeLibraryResumeworkshopsthroughOCDandclubsPAYATTENTIONtoOCD-announceddeadlinesforpublishingyourresume!3OverviewTheresumeintherecruitingprocessResumesareimportantduringtheearlierstagesoftherecruitingprocess.Recruitersuseresumestoevaluatethesufficiencyofthecandidate’sbackgroundforthejobwhichtheyarehiringandtodeterminewhomtointerview.MostMBAsarelookingtomakeacareerswitchandmostrecruitersunderstandthat.Therefore,recruitersdon'tnecessarilyrequiredirectindustryexperienceontheresume.However,theresumemusthighlighttransferableskills(e.g.quantitativeanalysis,creativity,leadership,etc.)thatarerelevanttothepositionbeingsought.Whatmakesforagoodresume?Agoodresumeconsistsofthreeelements.First,theeducationsectionshouldclearlysignalthecareerintentofthestudent(i.e.marketing,consulting,high-tech,healthcare,etc.);agoodresumedoesnotsignalintentinmultipledirections(i.e.marketingANDfinance).Secondly,theexperiencesectionshouldhighlighttherelevantskillsandaccomplishmentsforthetargetedcareerfocus.Lastly,theadditionalsectionshouldcontaininformationaboutthecandidatewhichwouldmakethecandidateuniqueandinteresting.On-campusrecruitingrequiresaresumeiniMpactformatInordertominimizeconfusionaroundissuesofresumeformattingforstudentsaswellasforrecruiters,whohavetoreadtheresumes,allstudentswhowishtouseon-campusrecruitingservicesmustcreatearesumeintheiMpactformat.Therequirementforon-campusrecruitingisthatthestudenthasaprofessionallypresentableDefaultresumepublishedonlinebythedeadlineannouncedbyOCD.Studentswhoarerecruitingoff-campusarenotrequiredtousetheiMpactresumeformat,thoughkeepingyourresumetoonepageisstillrecommended.“Default”resumeandotherresumesTheDefaultresumeistheonlineresumethatrecruitersmayaccess.Ifstudentswanttoparticipateintheresumedatabase,theymustpublishaprofessionallypresentableresumebytheresumedeadlineannouncedbyOCD.StudentscancreatemultipleversionsoftheresumeinadditiontotheDefaultresume.Theseversionswillnotbeviewablebyrecruitersaspartoftheresumedatabase,butstudentscanusetheseresumeswhendroppingresumeandcoverlettersforinterviewopportunities.KeepinmindthatmanyrecruitersarealsoRossalumniandmaybeabletoviewyourstudentprofileoniMpact.Makesureyourstory(focus)inyourresumeisconsistentwithyourPersonalProfileoniMpact.CanIexceedonepageonaresume?Foron-campusrecruiting,studentsmustusetheiMpactformat,andtheiMpactformatisrestrictedtoonepage.Theonepageresumeisthestandardforbusinessresumes,andtheiMpactformatfollowsthatstandard.Ifyouarerecruitingoff-campus,youcancreatearesumeoutsideofiMpact.Sometimes,industrystandards(non-business)woulddictateaformatdifferentfromandpossiblylongerthantheiMpactformat.Inthosecases,studentsareobviouslyfreetoconstructacustomresumesuitablefortheindustry.WhendoIneedtocompletemyiMpactresume?StudentsseekinginternshipsmustcompletetheiriMpactresumesbythedeadlinedateannouncedbyOCD.Studentsmusthaveaprofessionallypresentableresumepublishedonlinebythatdate.Sometimeafterthatdate,on-campusrecruiterswillhavetheopportunitytodownloadandviewresumesoniMpact.TheiMpactresumeisanelectronicfileonline,soupdatestotheresumearepossibleevenafterthedeadlinedate,andrecruiterswillautomaticallyhaveaccesstotheupdatedversion.RepresentingyourselfaccuratelyintheresumeItisimportantthatyouportrayyourselfaccuratelyontheresume.Ifyouclaimthatanactionyoutooksavedyourcompany$50M,bepreparedtojustifyandsupportthatclaim.Intheend,youareresponsiblefortheaccuracyofanythingyouputonyourresume.Misrepresentingyourselfonyourresumemayhavesevereconsequences.Also,duringinterviews,itisverycommonforinterviewerstoaskyouto
