Goodmorning,IwouldliketoextendawarmwelcometopresidentBarakObama,secretaryofEducation,AllyDunken,WhiteHousestaff,schoolboardmembers,countyboardmembers,superintendentDr.PatridMuffi,Seniorstaff,PrincipalRudolphJackson，Wakefieldfaculty，andofcourse,myfellowclassmates.IamhonoredtohavebeenchosentospeakbeforemyclassmatesaswellasstudentsacrossAmericatoday.Overthepastthreeyears,Ihavetakentheadvantageofeveryacademic,extracurricularandcommunityopportunitythathasbeenpresentedtome.AsIthescholarwrintinggladthebetter,beingassignedtoanotherclasswasanoption.Iwasdeterminedtoexcel.Therefore,ImanagedtosucceedwithanadvancingclassAndmaintainingfocusalongAsIstandbeforemyIwantyoutoknowthatmaybehandedtous,butasstudents,wemusttakeresponsibilityforourfuture.Wemusttaketheownershipaboutwhatwewanttolearn.AsseniorTheopportunitities,IwouldnotbestandingherebeforeyoutointroducethepresidentoftheUnitedStatesasInothereJustwearefortunetohavepresidentBarakObamaTospeaktous.WearealsofortunetoAtthistime,itisagreathonorandpridetohaveeveryonetostandtowelcomethemanwhoprovedYes,wecan.Ladiesandgentlemen,pleasejoinmetowelcomethepresidentoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica,BarakObama.Helloeveryone-how'severybodydoingtoday?I'mherewithstudentsatWakefieldHighSchoolinArlington,Virginia.Andwe'vegotstudentstuninginfromallacrossAmerica,fromkindergartenthroughtwelfthgrade.AndI'mjustsogladthatallcouldjoinustoday.Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,it'syourfirstdayinanewschool,soit'sunderstandableifyou'realittlenervous.Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow,withjustonemoreyeartogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyou'rein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummer,andyoucould'vestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.Iknowthatfeel.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears,andmymother,shedidn'thavethemoneytosendmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,whichshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday–butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:30inthemorning.NowasyoumightimagineIwasn'ttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.Alotoftimes,I'dfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.ButwheneverI'dcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshe’dsay,Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster.SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool.ButI'mheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.I'mherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhat'sexpectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.NowI'vegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndI'vetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.I'vetalkedaboutteachers'responsibilityforinspiringstudents,andpushingyoutolearn.I'vetalkedaboutyourparents'responsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrack,andgetyourhomeworkdone,anddon'tspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththatXbox.I'vetalkedalotaboutyourgovernment'sresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthataren'tworkingwherestudentsaren'tgettingtheopportunitiestheydeserve.Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld-andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities.Unlessyoushowuptothoseschools;unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers;unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradults;andputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.Andthat'swhatIwanttofocusontoday:theresponsibilityeachofyouhasforyoureducation.Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyou'regoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.That'stheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter-maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper-butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatEnglishclasspaperthatassignedtoyou.Maybeyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor-maybeevengoodenoughtocomeupwiththenexti-Phoneoranewmedicineorvaccine-butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclass.MaybeyoucouldbeamayororaSenatororaSupremeCourtJustice,butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife-Iguaranteethatyou'llneedaneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?You'regoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecareers.Youcan'tdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.You'vegottotrainforit,andworkforitandlearnforit.Andthisisn'tjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.Whatyou'relearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.You'llneedtheknowledgeandproblem-solvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecancerandAIDS,andtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourenvironment.You'llneedtheinsightsandcriticalthinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudies
