LingyinTempleSituatedatthefoodofLingyinMountain,asidefromtheWestLake,LingyinTemple(TempleofInspiredSeclusion)isoneofthetenmostfamousancientBuddhisttemplesinChina.FirstbuiltbyanIndianmonkHuiliin326ADduringtheEasternJindynasty(317-420AD),thetemplewasnamedLingyinTemple(TempleofInspiredSeclusion)foritsenvironmentisverybeautifulandsereneandsuitableforgodsrestinseclusion.Initsprime,thistemple,containingover1300roomsand3000monks,usedtobealargemonasterywithascaleyoujustimagine.Duetowarandcalamity,thetemplehasexperiencedabout1700yearsofrepeatedcirclesofprosperityanddeclineuntilitslastrestorationintheQingdynasty(1644-1911).Onthecompound’scentralaxlestandHallofHeavenlyKings,DaxiongbaodianHall(PreciousHalloftheGreatHero),PharmaceuticalMasterHallandGreatMercyHall.HallofHeavenlyKingsItisthefirsthallafterenteringthetemple.AtabletinscribedwithcloudforestBuddhisttemple,pennedbyEmperorKangxi,whowasinspiredononeoccasionbythesightofthetempleinthemistandtrees,washungabovethedoor,producingasacredatmospherehere.Morenoticeableisacouplethungonthedoorreading:Letuswaitsittingonthethresholdofthetemple,foranotherpeakmayflyfromafar.Smilesappearwelcoming,forthebrookisgraduallywarminguptothespringtime.Whentouristsadmirethecouplet,theycan’thelpbutgrin.InsidethehallisastatueoflaughingBuddhawhocanendureeverythingunendurableintheworldandlaughateverylaughablepersonintheworld.FourheavenlykingsstandonbothsidesoftheBuddhaandWeituobehind.DaxiongbaodianHall(GrandHall)DaxiongbaodianHall(GrandHall)isthemainhallofLingyinTemple.Itis7roomswideand5roomsdeep,withonestory,doublelayereavesandpinnacleroof33.6metersinheight,famedasoneofChina’stallestone-storybuildings.AstatueofSakyamuni,carvedoutof24piecesofcamphorwood,stands24.8metershighinthehall.OnthebothsidesofSakyamunistand20saintsprotectingjusticeandonthebackwallsithis12disciplesservingasguards.InfrontofthehallaretwostonepagodasbuiltduringtheNorthernSongdynasties(960-1279)with9storiesand8surfacesandsculpturedBuddhiststoriesonfourwalls.Scatteredoutsideandinsidethetemplearenumerousrelicsleftfromancienttimes,inwhichPavilionofCoolBrookerectedinthemidTangdynasty,stonepagodaandstonestorageforBuddhistscripturesbuiltintheFivedynasties,PavilionofGreensfirstbuiltintheSouthernSongdynasty,thepagodaofHuilierectedintheMingdynasty(1368-1644)areespeciallyworthyofviewing.ThetemplealsohousesvariousBuddhistliteratureandtreasuresincludingthescriptureswrittenonpattraleaves,theDiamondSutracopiedbyDongQichangintheMingdynasty,awoodcuteditionpublishedintheQingdynasty.
