‘87YAMAHAFZR1000YamahaFZR1000Genesislaysclaimto“ultimateroadmachine“titleYamaha‘slineleaderfor1987isasensationalnewcomer.TheFZR1000Genesis,amachinethatcan,quitejustifiably,claimtobethemostsophisticated,mosttechnologically-advancedmotorcyclecurrentlyavailableforroaduse.ltistheembodimentofYamaha‘sprogressivethinkingthathasunequivocallyestablishedthecompanyasoneoftheworld‘sleadingfour-strokeenginemanufacturers.Anewconcept,introducedtwoyearsagowiththehighly-successfulFZ750Genesis,linksengineandchassisdevelopmentprogrammessothateachpositivelyaffectstheother.Centraltothisconceptisanadvanced-specification,steeplyinclined,four-strokeengine;thislay-outwecall“Genesis“.Theweightdistributionissuchthatitactivelypromotesgoodhandlingaswellasallowingtheuseofstate-of-the-artchassisengineeringbyvirtueofitsconfiguration.InthecaseoftheYamahaFZR1000Genesis,boththeengineandchassisrepresentthehighestlevelofmotorcycledevelopment.Thefour-cylinderengineisanenlargedversionofthe20-valveFZ750Genesisunitthathasproveditscapabilitieswithworldwideracingsuccess...includingthefamousDaytona200.Thiswell-provenbasicpowerunitisinstalledinanaluminium“DELTABOX“chassisoriginally-developedforYamaha‘sWorldChampionship-winningGrandPrixmachinesandtheYZF75O“Genesis“enduranceracers.Suspension,wheelsandbrakesarealsoconstructedtothesameGrandPrixstandards,sothattheobvioushorsepowercapabilitiesoftheFZR1000Genesiscanbeusedwiththefullconfidencethathandlingandsafetyaspectsaretotallycompatiblewiththespeedpotential.Thepackageiscompletedbyafullfairingwithaerodynamicsthathavebeentestedandprovedtoincreasebothairpenetrationandmachinestabilityatthehighspeedsitiscapableof.Dualheadlightsandfrontalairintakesinthefairingemphasisetheendurance-racerheritageoftheFZR1000Genesis.Yamahahavesetouttodoonethingwiththismachine.Toprovethatthehighly-advancedfour-strokeenginedevelopmentwithGenesisconcept,genuinelymarksanewbeginningformotorcycledesignthinking.Optimumperformancefromengine,chassis,Suspensionandbrakesresultfromthe“Genesisconcept“andtheYamahaFZR1000Genesisisasuperbexampleofwhatcanbeachieved.ThesuccessfulFZ750Genesispointedoutanewdirectionforsupersportsmotorcycling.TheYamahaFZR1000Genesisconfirmsthatthisdirectionwasnodead-endstreet.‘87YAMAHAFZR1000YamahaFZR1000engineclose-up:BaseunitfortheFZR1000Genesisengineisthenow-familiarFZ750Genesis20-valve,parallelfour-cylinder,four-stroke.TheFZR,however,isfarfrombeingjustabored-outversionofthisdoubleoverhead-camshaftmotorwithitscharacteristicGenesislay-out:45-degreeforwardinclinedcylinderblock.TherearenumerousothermodificationstotheFZR1000designedspecificallytomatchitslargercapacity.Mostobviousdifferenceisstill,ofcourse,theincreaseinsize.Toarriveatthecapacityof989cc,YamahahaveexpandedbothboreandstrokeoftheFZR.Itsvitalstatisticsarea75mmborex56mmstroke,comparedtothe68x51,6mmmeasurementsoftheFZ750.BiggerValves:Allfivevalvesineachcombustionchamberareincreasedinsize,toflowthegreateramountsoffueldemandedbythebiggerengine.Thetripleintakevalvesgoupfrom21mmto23.5mmindiameter,whilethetwoexhaustvalvesareexpandedfrom23mmto25mm.Tomaintainthecorrectcombustionchambershapewiththeselargervalveheads,thevalvesaresetatnarroweranglesinthecylinderhead.Thecentreintakevalveisnowsetat9-degreesandthetwoouteronesat17-degrees.Exhaustvalveanglesare13-degrees.Bothcamshaftshavemodifiedprofilesandaredrivenbyanautomatically-tensionedcam-chain.Big-Bore,DowndraftCarburettors:Feedinginthefuel/airmixtureisabankoffourBDS37Mikunicarburettors(3mmlargerventurisizethanthoseontheFZ750Genesis).AsonthesmallerFZ,the450-inclinedcylinderblockandwellspacedtopchassismembersallowtheuseoftruedowndraftcarburetion.Theinlettractissostraightandunobstructedthatitispossibletoseethepistoncrownthroughthecarburettorthroatwhentheinletvalvesareopen!This,plusthegravityeffectontheingoingmixture,makesforthebest-possiblecylinderfillingfromanormally-aspiratedengine.lt‘soneofthemajorbenefitsderivingfromYamaha‘s“Genesis“designand5valvetechnology.LighterPistonsandCon-rods:Insidetheengine,thepistons,ringsandconnectingrodsareall-newandevenlighterthanlastyear‘s750cccomponents!Thiscutsreciprocatingweightsoallowingtheenginetorevquickerwithimprovedthrottleresponse.OnethingthatiscommontobothFZ750GenesisandFZR1000Genesisistheengine‘sborecentres.WhatthismeansisthattheFZRisnowiderthanitssmallercousin,makingit-withoutdoubt-thenarrowestbikeinthel000ccclass.Maintainingthesameborecentreswasachievedbyusing“siamesed“boresinthebwpressurealloycylinderblockcasting,withinsertedcast-ironsleeves.Thiskeepstheblockasnarrowaspossibleandminimisesheatdistortion,anditsitsonanew,metalgaskettoensurebettersealingwiththecrankcase.‘87YAMAHAFZR1000Oil-JetPistonCooling:Toreducepistontemperatures,anewoil-jetsystemhasbeenincorporatedintothecrankcase.Thesejetsdirectacontinuousstreamoffresh,coolingoiltotheundersidesofthepistons.Oiliscirculatedthroughtheenginebyadual-rotorpumpandanoil-coolerisstandardequipment.Alsoassistinginmaintainingtheliquid-cooledFZRGenesisunitataneventemperatureisaradiator25mmwiderthantheFZ750component.Airisdirectedover
