(Chinese:丽江市;pinyin:Lìjiāngshì)referstoanadministrativedivisioncomprisingofurbanandruralareasinnorthwesternYunnanProvince,People'sRepublicofChina.Itspopulationis1,100,000.ThefamousLijiangoldtown(asitiscommonlyknown)ismorecorrectlycalledtheDayanoldtown(大研古镇).LijiangCityisafairlylargegeographicalareathatcomprisesonedistrict(theoldtowndistrict)andfourcounties,includingtheLiijangnewtown,Dayanoldtown,Shuheoldtown(束河古镇),Baishaoldtown(白沙古镇),andpartsoftheTigerLeapingGorge.TheLijiangoldtownhasahistorygoingbackmorethan800yearsandwasonceaconfluencefortradealongtheoldteahorseroad.TheLijiangoldtownisfamousforitsorderlysystemofwaterwaysandbridges.IthasbeencalledtheVeniceoftheEast.TheoldtownofLijiangdiffersfromotherancientChinesecitiesinarchitecture,historyandthecultureofitstraditionalresidentstheNaxipeople,thereforepeopletherearecalled胖金哥and胖金妹(maleandfemalerespectively).OnethirdofthetownwasdestroyedbyanearthquakeinFebruary1996.Lijiangoldtown(includingDayan,BaishaandShuhe)wasregisteredontheUNESCOWorldHeritageListinDecember4,1997.Sincethen,thelocalgovernmenthastakenmoreresponsibilityforthedevelopmentandprotectionoftheoldcity.Lijiang'stourismalsoboomed,andtravellersfromaroundtheworldfloodedin;althoughmanylocalsfearthatduetomuchofthedevelopment,theoldtownofLijiangwillloseitsappeal.Recently,thegovernmenthasstartedtodevelopadditionaloldcitysectionsadjacenttothesiteoftheoriginaloldcity.Thisistoaccommodatethelargenumberoftourists,particularlyHanChinese,whowalkthecobblestonestreets(carsarenotallowedintheoldcity),typicallyaspartofpackagetours.Eveningsintheoldcitycanbeparticularlyrowdy,notleastduetothemanyoutdoorbars,whereboisterousgroupsoftouriststrytooutsingothergroups.LijiangisabeautifulshiningjewelontheNorthwestYunnanPlateauneighboringthesoutheastsideoftheTibetanPlateauwhichisconsideredtobetheRoofoftheWorld.Itisimpressivebecauseofitssceneryandlushvegetation.Lijiangboastsofbreath-takingwonderfulsightssuchasJadeDragonSnowMountainanditsmodernmaritimeglacier,theonlyoneofitskindinthesouthernendoftheNorthernHemisphere;TigerLeapingGorge;theworld-famousgrandcanyon;LuguLake,theculturalcradleoftheMatriarchyoftheYongningMosuopeopleinNinglang.LijiangTownisofficiallycalledDayanTown——Dayanliterallymeansagreatinkstab,agraphicdescriptionofthetown'slocationonapieceofrichflatlandfedbyariverandsurroundedbygreenmountains.ThereisnoothertowninChinalikeDayanwhichincorporatesthefolkwaysofsomanypeopleandthearchitecturalstylesofbothnorthandsouthChina.ThepeopleofNaxi,whiledevelopingtheirlandofsnow-cladmountainsandturbulentriverssinceancienttimes,havetotheircredittheDongBaCultureseenasoneoftheworldwonders,acultureall-embracingwhileunique.AllthesenaturalsceneriesandtheseculturaltreasuresoftheminoritypeopleshavebeencontinuouslydrawingtouristsfromallovertheworldandhaverecentlyvoteLijiangasoneofthefavoritedestinationsinChina.Notes:1.Lijiang丽江2.RoofoftheWorld世界屋脊3.JadeDragonSnowMountain玉龙雪山4.Tiger-leapingGorge虎跳峡5.LuguLake泸沽湖6.DayanTown大研镇
