TheStarCity-ChangshaSituatedintherivervalleyalongthelowerpartofXiangRiver,ChangshaisthecapitalcityofHunanprovince.TherecordedhistoryofChangshacanbetracedback3000years.Tombrelicsfromtheprimitiveperiodswitnessingtheearliesthumanofactivitieshavebeendiscoveredinthisregion.DuringtheSpringandAutumnperiod(770B.C-476B.C.),theareadevelopedintoanimportanttownwithintheStateofChu,(oneofthesevenwarringstatesthatexistedbeforeChina’shistory)unifiedthecountry,thetownwassetupasacountyandlaterbecamethecapitalcityofastateintheearlyHanDynasty(206B.C-220).ThetombexcavationsiteofMawangduifoundintheeasternsuburbofthecityisafamilygraveyardfromthatperiod.Themostfantastichistoricalrelicshouldbethewell-preservedmummifiedremainsofaWesternHanDynastywomanexcavatedfromthetombs.Sometothousandsofrelicsunearthedincludesilkproducts,paintings,lacquerworks,potteries,bambooslipsusedforwriting,weaponsandherbs,allofwhichareexhibitedinHunanProvincialMuseum.Inthedynastiesthatfollowed,thecityexperiencedseveralexpansionsandduringChina’sQingDynasty(1644-1911),ithasdevelopedintothepolitical,economicandculturalcenterofHunanProvince.AlthoughnotasancientacapitalcityasBeijing,NanjingorXi’an,Changshaalsohasrichhistoricalheritagesincludingoldwallremains,tombsites,religioustemplesandbuildings.Whatearnsthecityitsreputationamongtouristsaretwothings.OneisagreatmaninChina’srecenthistory,ChairmanMaoZedongandtheotherisYueluAcademy,atime-honoredacademicschoolperchedonthescenicYueluMountain.Originallybuiltin976duringtheSongDynasty,theacademyschoolsurvivedthroughtheYuan,MingandQingdynastiesandisconsideredtobethecradleofHuxiangCulture.(SimplymeansthecultureschoolinHunanProvince)ThevillageofShaoshan,about130kilometerssouth-westofChangshaisthehometownofChairmanMaoZedong.Today,thevillagehasbecomeamemorialplaceforChinesepeopletorememberthisextraordinaryman.PeopleerectedastatueoftheChairmanandhavepreservedthehouseshelivedasatouristsite.Amuseumandothermemorialspotsinthescenicareacreateakindofsolemnatmosphere.ManyChinesecometopayrespectandvisithereduringthememorialdays.Inaddition,thecitywashometootherrevolutionaryleadersincludingLiuShaoqi,HuYaobangandformerChineseprimeminister,ZhuRongji.Therefore,itactsasagoodplacetolearnmoreaboutChina’srecenthistory.ChangshapeopleboasttobethebestgourmandofChinaandherepeoplespendalotoftimeeating.XiangcuisineisoneoftheEightCuisinesinChinaandhasafineanddelicateappearanceandahot&sourtasteandheavyandhottasteisanequalcompetitortothespicyfoodofSicuan.Streetdiningandrestaurantsinthecitymakeeveryvisitor’smouthhot.Nomatterthefeaturedsnacks:“StinkyTofu”and“SistersriceBalls”inHuogongdian(FirePalace)orthefamousspicyshrimpsatNanmenkou,themanytypesofdeliciouslocalfoodwillnotdisappointanyguests.Changshapeoplearealsorenownedfortheiractingandhavecreatedvarioustraditionalfolkartperformancesoftheirownincludingthelocaloperas,storytelling,drumopera,acrobaticsandotherdramaticstyles.Everyonecanfeeltheirhospitalitiesandenthusiasmbytheirvigorousdances.Today,mostoftheentertainmenthousesinthecitypresentdynamicandentertainingperformancesfeaturingablendofthetraditionalessenceandthemodernflare.TheneonlightsofKTVsquares,discoparlors,clubsanddancingsquaresilluminatethecityatnight.DottedwithallsortsofbarsandpubsJiefangXilu,althoughnotasprosperousasSunlitunPubStreetinBeijing,hasitsownstyles.Romanticandquietbars,dynamicshowbars,teahouses,westernstylerestaurants……Peopleofallagescanfindtheiridealplacetospendtheirleisuretime.
