ALetterofRecommendation(一封推荐信)DearBrown,ItismypleasuretorecommendXiaoYu,whoisplanningtopursuegraduatestudiestowardsaPh.D.degreeatyourschooloflinguisticsstartingfromthefallof2014.XiaoYugraduatedfromShanxiNormalUniversity.HermajorisForeignLinguisticsandAppliedLinguistics.ShehasdoneagoodjobintheSchoolofForeignLanguages,ShiheziUniversity.Sheisanassociateprofessorwithtwelveyears’teachingexperienceandoutstandingresearchresultsinthefieldoflinguistics.Sheisanenthusiasticandprogressiveyoungladywithhighpotentiality.Heisnotonlyquickatlearningbutalsogoodatsolvingdifficultproblemswithlogicalmind.Iamsurethatitwillbenefityourschoolifshecangoforherfurtherstudy.Istronglyrecommendhertoyou.Faithfullyyours,LeiFengCellphone:E-mail:IamplanningtopursuegraduatestudiestowardsaPh.D.degreeatyourschoolofengineeringstartingfromthefallof2012.Myinterestinthebuildingstructurecanbetracedbacktomysuccessinhighschoolyears,whenIexcelledmyfellowclassmatesinphysicsandgeometry.Thisnotonlyfiredoffmyinterestinstructuraldesignbutalsohelpedtolaysolidgroundworkformyundergraduatestudiesincivilengineering,whichheavilyinvolvedmechanicsinphysicsandsolidgeometry.Withexcellentscoresinthecompulsorynationaluniversityentranceexamination,Iwonacceptancein1991intotheBeijingPolytechUniversity,oneofChina’stop10engineeringschools,particularlywell-knownforitsstructuralengineering.Forfiveyearsatthisuniversity,Ireceivedstrictandthoroughtraininginareassuchasbuildingstructures,buildingmaterials.Soilmechanicsandfoundation,concreteandmasonrystructures,construction,steelstructureandearthquakeresistantstructure.Ialsotookeveryopportunitytoparticipateinco-poworkandprojectscommissionedbyconstructionanddesigncompanies.OpportunitiesaboundforcivilengineersandcivilengineeringstudentsinChina,whichnowhousestheworld’sfastestgrowingmajoreconomy.Ateveryyear’sjobfairheldonthecampusofthePolytechUniversity,morethan200positionscompetefor60-oddgraduatingstudents.Undersuchcircumstances,undergraduatestudentsintheirfifthyeararealsoinhighdemandforinternshipatvariousconstructioncompaniesanddesigninstitutes.Virtuallyeverystudentgetsafullworkloadimmediatelyuponstartingtheinternshipandassumesconsiderableresponsibilitiessoonafterwards.Ibecametheluckiestamongtheluckybywinningarareopportunityforanycivilengineer:toparticipateinthedesignoftheBeijingWesternRailwayStation,thelargesturbanstructureinChinauptodate.ThishappenedwhileIinterned,alongwithfiveotherschoolmates,attheBeijingArchitecturalInstitute.ThisinstitutehasdesignedvirtuallyallthemodernlandmarkbuildingsinChina,includingthefamousGreatHallofthePeopleandtheMuseumofRevolutionaryHistoryontheTiananmenSquare,theBeijingRailwayStationandtheAsianGamesVillage.ItwasonthestrengthofmyacademicmeritsthatIgottoenjoytheseopportunities.TheWesternstationprojectinBeijingconsistedofthemailhall(70,000squaremeters),southwingbuildinggroup(40,000squaremeters)andnorthwingbuildinggroup(35,000squaremeters).Mytaskwastoassistinthedesignofashoppingcentreinthesouthwingwhichhad16,000squaremeters.Iindependentlyaccomplishedaquarterofthedesignforthewholebuilding,mainlyresponsibleforthefoundationdesign,calculationanddrawingofsteeldistributionofbeam,floor,columnsandconcretepiles.IcherishedthisopportunitytoapplytheknowledgeIhadlearnedintheclassroomtotherealworldproblemsandIworkedwithmyutmostdedication.I,however,soonfoundoutthat,eveninthismonumentalproject,designtechniquesappliedinmanycasesleftmuchtobedesired.Whentreatingthewindload,theearthquakeforceandtheeffectoffrozensoil,historicaldataandintelligentestimateswereusedinplaceofaccuratemeasuring.Thisphenomenonmademedeterminedtoimprovemyknowledgeandskillsinagraduateprogramthatcanteachsophisticatedknow-how,suchasyours.Itregrettablyturnedoutthatthedesignofthemailhallwasseriouslyflawed,whichdrewintensemediaattentionnationwide.Thestructuresanktwometersaftercompletion.Asexpertscontinuetohelpthecourtdeterminewhoisresponsible,Imyselfhavebeenawedbythisdramaandkeptresearchingiteversinceitbecameknown.Mytentativeexplanation,submittedtotakeintoaccounttheundergroundwater’spowerofbuoyancy,eventhoughthestructurebasewasputbelowthewaterbed.Thestructurefloateduntilenoughloadwasmounted.Theproperconstructionmethodthereforeshouldhaveinvolvedartificialprecipitationuntilthecompletionofstructure.Upongraduationin1996,IjoinedtheBeijingBiggestCo.,oneofthefourlargestconstructioncompaniesinChina,andimmediatelytookonmanagementdutiesasanassistantmangerattheconstructionsite.Ihavesupervisedsteelengineering,concreteengineeringandplatformengineeringfortheretwenty-threestorybuildingsintheBeijingDDresidentialarea,atotalof60,000squaremetersinapartments.Inthiscapacity,Iwascompelledtolearnmanagementskillswhichhadneverbeentaughtintheclassroom.AlthoughconstructionmanagementisnotwhatIforeseetobealifetimepursuit,Iexecutedmydutymeticulouslyandcreatively.Ibecamethefirstconstructionsitemanagerinthecompanytoconductexperimentscomparingbox-weirmaintenanceandthetraditionalmanualwateringmethod.Byusingbox-weirmethod,weakconcreteandcracksintheconcretewereeliminated.Throughtheseimportant,alb
