姓名:严婷婷学号:0812010007班级:08英语1班MyLearningFeedbackoftheInterpretingCourseIt’sreallyluckyformetohavetakenthecourseofinterpretingskillsthisterm,becausethiscoursereallybenefitsmealot.Aboveall,mylisteningskillshavebeenimprovedtoamuchhigherlevelthanbeforethroughinterpretinglearning.Weallknowthat,withoutagoodlisteningtocatchwhatthespeakerssayinsourcelanguage,itwouldbeimpossibleforusinterpreterstotransformitintothetargetlanguage.ListeningisthefirstandprimarystepforEnglishlearnerstobeagoodinterpreter.Keepingthisrealizationinthemind,Ipaymyspecialattentiontothestudyoflistening.Intheclass,theroutineofnewslisteningalwaysremindsmeoftheimportanceoflisteningtowardsthiscourse.Afterclass,IinsistonspendingoneortwohourseverydaylisteningBBC,VOA,CNN,CRIoranyotherEnglishresourceIcangettopracticeEnglishlistening.Withnearlyaterm’sperseverantefforts,youcanimaginetheprogressthathasbeenmade.Nowadays,Ihavelessdifficultyinunderstandingwhatforeignerssayindailylife.IcanstillfollowspeakerswithoutreferringtotheChinesetranslationwhenIwatchmovies.ItistheInterpretingCoursethatpushesmetolistentoEnglisheverydaysoastoavoidbeingrustyontheskills.Iappreciatethisclass,notonlybecauseithelpstoimprovemylisteningability,butalsoitmakesmeformahabitoflisteningtoEnglisheveryday.WearenotEnglishnativespeakers,soitispreeminentlyimportantforuslearnerstolistentoitallthetimesothatwecanimmenseourselvesintheatmospheresurroundedbyEnglishlanguage.Inthefollowingdays,thegoodhabitwillcontinuetoaccompanyme.Keeplistening,andIbelieveonedaymylisteningskillswillreachthelevelthataqualifiedinterpretershoulddo.ThesecondbenefitIhavegotfromtheclassistheimprovementofmyspokenEnglish.Admittedly,aninterpretermustbebilinguallycapableofnotonlylisteningbutalsospeaking.Interpretingrequiresyoutoexpressintargetlanguagewhatyou’vegotfromthesourcelanguageonthebasisofunderstanding.Inthissense,onlybeingagoodlistenerisnotenoughatall.WhenIknewthefactinthefirstclassofthiscourse,Ireallyfeltabigchallengeinfrontofme.SpokenEnglishwasalwaysmystrongestweakpoint.EachtimeItriedtospeakoutEnglish,thepoorpronunciationandintonationcannotbeenduredevenbymyself,stilllessbymylisteners.SoIchosetoshutupmymouth.Avoidspeakingitandthenyouwouldavoiddiscomfortandbeingfrustratedbyit,whichwasalwaysthewayIusedtocomfortmyselfbeforetakingtheclass.However,thingschangenow.TheInterpretingCourseisdifferentfromthecourseswehavelearntbefore.Intheclassoflistening,reading,grammarandwriting,mostofthetimeisspentlisteningtotheteachers’speechandnoonewillblameyouifyouchoosetobesilent.Inthiscourse,however,youhavetospeakoutEnglish,whetheryoulikeitornot.Atfirst,IwasforcedtospeakEnglishintheclass.Gradually,IdaredtopracticeinterpretingandnowIfeeleasywhenhearingmyownvoice.AlthoughmyspokenEnglishisfarawayfromtherequirementsagoodinterpreterneedstomeet,IamstillpleasedwiththeprogressI’vemadenowbecauseIbelievethat“Wellbegunishalfdone”and“Practicemakesperfect.”ThemostimportantanddirectharvestIachievefromthecourseiscertainlythetheoryandskillsofinterpreting.Theissuesofhowtotakenotesininterpretation,howtomemorizetheinformationandwhatmannersinterpretersshouldhaveareallcoveredinthiscourse.Agoodmasteryoftheseskillsundoubtedlywillsmooththewayforinterpreterstodotheirjob.However,therestillexistsomeproblemsaftertakingtheclass.Firstly,IfindthatdifferentregionalaccentsthatEnglishspeakershavearethebigobstacleforusEnglishlearnerstoovercome.Wehaveindeedstudiedtheforeignlanguageformanyyears,butjustfocusedonthestandardEnglish.So,whenwelistentosomenon-standardEnglishinourcoursebook,wecanhardlyunderstandwhatthespeakersaresaying,nottomentioninterpretit.ThisgivesusareminderthatyouneedtohaveagoodmasteryofdifferentkindsofvarietiesofEnglish,notjusttheStandardEnglishifyouasaninterpreterwanttoperformwellondifferentoccasions.Secondly,thehugepsychologystressisalsoabigproblemwealwaysmeetwheninterpreting.Whenwelearnthecourse,actually,wedothejobinanidealenvironment.Wejustlistentothesoundrecordingsandinterprettoourselves.Whatonlymattersisourprofessionalskill.However,interpretingintherealsituationisnotsuchasimplecaseatall.Psychologystressisagoodexample.Theoccasion,thepersonsyouservefor,theatmosphere,allthesethingsmaycauseyourtensionduringyourjobandthereforebringabadeffectonyourperformance.Mistakes,embarrassmentcausedbystagefrightoccurveryoften.So,whatweshoulddonowtohelpusovercomepsychologystressinthefuture’sinterpretingjob?Maybe,thebestwayisjusttoputyourselfintherealsituation.Themoreyouhaveexperienced,themorecapableyouwouldbecomeofdealingwithunexpectedconditions.Therefore,ifI’maskedwhetherIhavesomeadviceforourteaching,thisisallIwanttosay—creatingsomechancesforstudentstopracticetheirinterpretingtheoryandskillsinthepracticaluse.Possiblyifwillbeatoughjob,butitreallycanbenefitstudentsalot!.
