Unit5Readingcomprehension1-7:BBDADAB8.ancient,historicandreligiouslandmarks.9.creativity,ingenuity,andbravery.10.theysavedthehistoryofAfghanfilmmaking.HomelisteningIListentothePasaage1-5FTFFTIIListenagainmuchpropertywasdestroyed;irreplaceableworksofart;thereligiouspolice;soldtocollectors;precioushistoricalandartistictreasures;takenfromthecountry’smajormuseums;thathadbeenburied;befoundorreturned;well-establishedpublicgalleries;privatecollectors;putinsecretstorage.AudioscriptWhenArtbecomesaVictimDuringtheyearswhentheTalibanregimeruledAfghanistan,thousandsofpeoplewerekilledandmuchpropertywasdestroyed.However,theAfghanpeoplealsosufferanotherkindofveryimportantloss—thelossofirreplaceableworksofart.Some,likethegiantstatuesofBuddhaatBamiyan,weresimplydestroyedbythereligiouspolice.Manyothers,however,weresoldtocollectorsandshippedoutofthecountry.Obviously,thelossofculturalheritageforthecountryistragic,howeverinadditiontoAfghanistan,situationslikethisexistinmanywar-torncountries,includingIraq.Theyhavealsoexistedinthepast,includinginEurope,duringandafterWroldWarII.NooneknowsforcertainhowmanyofIraq’sprecioushistoricalandartistictreasuresarenowlostbecauseoftherecentwar.Duringtheearlydaysoftheconflict,attentionwasfocusedonobjectsbeingtakenfromthecountry’smajormuseums,someofwhichhavebeenreturned.However,astimepassed,researchersbegantorealizethatperhapsanevengreaterlosswasoccuringelsewhereinthecountry.Peoplewerediggingupimportanthistoricalandartistictreasuresthathadbeenburiedforthousandsofyears.Becauseofthechaosinthenationatthetime,therobberswereabletoremovethesevaluableitemsandshipthemputofthecountry.ManyofthesenationaltreasuresmayneverbefoundorreturnedtotheirrightfulhomeinIraq.DuringtheperiodofNazidominationinGermany,manyworksofart,suchaspaintings,statues,books,coins,andothervaluableobjectsweretakenbythegovernmentfromwell-establishedpublicgalleriesaswellasprivatecollectorsinGermanyandelsewhere.Someitemswereplacedinmuseums.Butmanyotherswereputinsecretstorage,wheretheyhaveyettobediscovered.ManyitemswerealsotakenfromnuseumsintheSovietUnionandtheNetherlands.ImmediatelyafterWorldWarIIended,asecondtypeofartworktheftbegantotakeplace.Beforetheyleftthecountry,occupyingarmiesbegantheirformofstealing.Mostofthetheftinvolvedindividualstakingworksofartfortheirownpersonalcollections.However,someoftheartworktakenbytheNazianddiscoveredbytheoccupyingarmiesactuallyendedupinthecontrolofforeigngovernments.TalksarestilltakingplacebetweenGermany,theU.S.,Russia,andothercountriesoverthetrueownershipoftheseworksofart.
