SisterCarrieTheodoreDreiser,borninTerreHaute,Indiana,USA,wasraisedinpovertyandinaGerman-speakingenvironment.HelefthomeforChicagoatage16.AfteraperiodofoddjobsandayearattheUniversityofIndiana,hebecameaMidwesternnewspaperreporterand,inNewYorkafter1894,amagazinefeaturewriter.In1892,marriedSaraWhite,buttheirmarriagewasn’thappy,sotheyhavebeenseparatedsince1909andneverofficiallydivorcedSisterCarrie(1900),hisfirstandstillhighlyregardednovel,waswithheldfromgeneraldistributionbecauseofitwassupposedamoral,anditscommercialfailureplungedhimintofinancialdistressandmentalbreakdown.Somereasonswhichcausedthedifficultiesofpublishcanbeseenfromthesocialbackgroundofthesocietyofthattime.Atthetime,UnitedStatesisexperiencingarapidsocialchange,itwastransformingfromfreecapitalismtransitiontothemonopolycapitalism.ThewholeAmericanliteraturewasindulgedinidealism,manywriterspreferredtodescribetheoptimisticaspectoflife.Thenovelisregardedasentertainmentproducts;worksisfullofillusoryidealandcoveredbyromanticcolor.Theexploiterandexploiteelivedacompletelydifferentlife.Theuglyphenomenoninthesocietywasnotreflectedinliteratureworks.InSisterCarrie,Dreisertruthfullyrevealsthedarksideofthesociallife,andthat’sthereasonwhytheauthorconstantlysufferedfrompersecution.Thenovelshavebeenclassifiedasbanned,andcannotbepublishedintheAmerica.SisterCarrieisaboutayoungcountrygirlwhomovestothebigcitywhereshestartsrealizingherownAmericanDream,firstasamistresstomenthatsheperceivesassuperior,andlaterbecomingafamousactress.IthasbeencalledthegreatestofallAmericanurbannovels.ThepersonallifeofthewriterhasverycloserelationshipwithhisworkSisterCarrie.Therearesomesimilaritiesbetweentheauthorandtheheroine.First,theheroinewasborninapoorfamilyjustassameastheauthor.That’swhytheauthorcanknowsoclearlyaboutthepsychologicalactivityofthepoorgirlCarrieanddescribeditinsuchdelicatewords.Second,itcanbeseenfromthenovelthattheplacewherethegirlchaseherdreamwasChicago.Theauthoralsohasgonetothesameplacetofulfillhisdream.SohesawwhatCarriesaw.Forinstance,howtherichmenlived,howtheyenjoytheirlife,whatwasthepoor’slifelike,withsuchalivingexperience,thegapbetweentherichandthepoorwassotrulyreflectedbeforeoureyes.Third,theyallonceareearningmeagersupportfrommenialjobs.Forth,theyallhavethesamedream.Dreiserhasadmittedthathewasoncechasedafterthepleasurefrommaterialthings,buthedespiseditafterwards.Carrie’slifewasalwayssurroundedbyherchasingforabettermateriallife.Atthebeginning,sheleftherhometownandcameforhersister.Butwhenhersister’slivingcouldn’tattractheranymore,shewenttothesalesmanDrouet,thenHursthoodandatlastthetheater.Excepttheheroine,thecharacterHursthoodwasnotsohappyinhismarriagelife,sowastheauthor.Hursthoodwassuppressedandlookingforsomethingnew,thrillandbeautiful.MaybeHursthood’smentalstatewasjustliketheauthor’sduringthatperiod.SvenHanson,Minnie'shusband,ofSwedishextractionandtaciturntemperament.Asweallknow,Dreiser’sfatherwasaSwedish,asevererigidanddistantman.WecanslightlysupposethatthecharacterofSvenHansonwasoriginatedfromhisfather.AsforCarrie,there’ssuchasentenceinthebook:“InCarrie—asinmanyofourworldingsdotheynot?—instinctandreason,desireandunderstanding,wereatwarforthemastery.Shefollowedwhitherhercravingled.Shewasasyetmoredrawnthanshedrew.”Thisseemstellsusthatthecurrencyofthesocietyisanoverwhelmingpowerthatpushesonetodosomethinganddefinestheviewofvalueforthepeople.IthinkthissentenceistheperfectdescriptionforCarrieandallherstories,everychoicesshemadejustshowushowsuitablethisdescriptionisforher.Throughtheheroine,theauthortriestorevealthehumannaturenakedlybeforeoureyes.WhenSisterCarrieranoutofhersister’shomewithoutanymoney,shemetDrouetandhegavehertensoftdollarbills.Ontheonehand,shefeltashamedbecauseshehasbeenweaktotakeit.Butontheotherhand,herneedwassodire,shewasstillglad.That’sthecontradictionofhernature.AftershemetHursthood,shewasattractedbyhim.Ontheonehand,shefeltguilty.Butonanother,shewaslongingforabetterlife.Andit’salsothesamesituationwhensheleftHursthoodwhenhebecamepoor.AsforDrouet,thebooktellsusinregardtohispursuitofwomen,hemeantthemnoharm,becausehedidnotconceiveoftherelationwhichhehopedtoholdwiththemasbeingharmful.Hechasedwomennotbecausehewasacold-blooded,dark,schemingvillain,butbecausehisinborndesireurgedhimtothatasachiefdelight.That’sthecontradictionofDrouet’snature.MostpeoplesaySisterCarrie’sstoryisastoryofherAmericandreamcomestrue.ButIdisagreewithit.Carriedoeshaveherdreamcometrue,finallyshelivesarichlifeandisadmiredbyothers.ButwhatisAmericandream?Itisasetofidealsinwhichfreedomincludestheopportunityforprosperityandsuccess,andanupwardsocialmobilityachievedthroughhardwork.WhilefromthebookIcan’tseeahardworkinggirl.WhenCarrie’slookingforajob,sheissotimidandcanonlyseethematerialthingsthatworkersgetinsteadofthepaintheybear.Aftershegetajobofmakingshoesinafactory,shedoesfeelhappyatfirst,butsoonfacingtheeasymoneyfromshedoeswanttodothisworkanymore.Ofcourse,asagirl,insuchasociety,withsucheconomicsituation,shemightnothavesomanychoices.But,althoughCarriedidsomethingnotsogood,Istillcannothatethischar
