ORIGINALARTICLEAstudyondynamicsimulationofphenoladsorptioninactivatedcarbonpackedbedcolumnS.M.Anisuzzaman*,AwangBono1,DudukuKrishnaiah2,YitZenTan3ChemicalEngineeringProgramme,SchoolofEngineeringandInformationTechnology,UniversitiMalaysiaSabah(UMS),88400KotaKinabalu,Sabah,MalaysiaReceived18September2013;accepted2January2014Availableonline27January2014KEYWORDSSimulation;Aspen;Adsorption;Activatedcarbon;PhenolAbstractThisstudyismainlyconcernedaboutthedynamicsimulationofphenoladsorptionwithinthepackedbedcolumnfilledwithactivatedcarbonderivedfromdates’stones.Theprocessparameterssuchascolumnlength,inletliquidflowrate,initialphenolconcentrationoffeedliquidandcharacteristicsofactivatedcarbonforthesmallscalepackedbedadsorptioncolumnareinves-tigatedbasedonthedynamicsimulationresultsusingAspenAdsorptionV7.1simulationprogram.Therelationshipbetweeninletliquidfeedflowrate,breakthroughtimeandsaturationtime,rela-tionshipbetweeninitialphenolconcentration,breakthroughtimeandsaturationtime,andrelation-shipbetweenpackedbedcolumnheight,breakthroughtime,saturationtime,andC/Coratiowerestudied.Basedontheoptimizedsimulationresults,theidealproposedsmallscaleadsorptioncol-umnsuitableforasinglehouseholdtotreatdrinkingwaterwhichiscontaminatedwith2.0189·107mol/lphenolconcentrationonannualusageshouldhaveacolumndiameter,columnheight,andactivatedcarbonparticlediametermagnitudes1.0m,10.0mand1.5mm,respectivelywith240m3/yearinletfeedliquidflowrate.However,basedonthesimulation,theadsorptioncol-umnisnotfeasibleforconventionalwatertreatmentplant.ª2014ProductionandhostingbyElsevierB.V.onbehalfofKingSaudUniversity.1.IntroductionPhenolisapollutantthatcanbefoundintheeffluentsofvar-iousindustriessuchaschemicalplants,oilrefineries,paperandpulpmills,gasification,phenolicresinmanufacturing,paintstrippingetc.(ChanandLim,2007;Buscaetal.,2008;Ahmaruzzaman,2008;Wangetal.,2012).Itcouldposeathreattolivingorganismsevenatlowconcentrationandithadreceivedgreatconcernespeciallywhenpollutedwaterbodyservedasdrinkablewaterforhumanbeings(Kumaretal.,2011).Althoughmanytreatmentalternativeshadbeenimplementedtoremovephenoliccompounds,adsorptionisstillregardedasthebestalternativebasedonitsperformance*Correspondingauthor.Tel.:+6088320000x3222;fax:+6088320348.E-mailaddresses:anis_zaman@ums.edu.my(S.M.Anisuzzaman),bono@ums.edu.my(A.Bono),krishna@ums.edu.my(D.Krishnaiah),yzegg1989@gmail.com(Y.Z.Tan).1Tel.:+6088320000x3129;fax:+6088320348.2Tel.:+6088320000x3420;fax:+6088320348.3Tel.:+60102433072;fax:+6088320348.PeerreviewunderresponsibilityofKingSaudUniversity.ProductionandhostingbyElsevierJournalofKingSaudUniversity–EngineeringSciences(2016)28,47–55KingSaudUniversityJournalofKingSaudUniversity–EngineeringSciences(Da˛browskietal.2005).However,mostresearchersreportedtheremovalofphenoliccompoundswithinsinglepacked-bedcolumninlab-scalemodel.Adsorptionisaphysicaltechniquewhichinvolvestheadherenceofparticularmoleculesontothesurfacesofadsor-bent.Adsorptiontechniquesemployingsolidadsorbenthavebeenwidelyusedtoremovecertainclassesofchemicalpollu-tantsfromwaste-water,suchasphenoliccompounds(Ahmaruzzaman,2008;AhmaruzzamanandSharma,2005).Richardetal.(2010)demonstratedthatvariousadsorbentsareavailableasthechoicesofadsorbentusedtoremovephe-noliccompoundsfromeffluentsviaadsorptionprocess,suchasbark(Vazquezetal.,2006),activatedsludge(AksuandGo¨nen,2004),resins(Oteroetal.,2005;Panetal.,2005),modifiedalumina(AdakandPal,2006)andactivatedcarbon(Ahmaruzzaman,2008;LuaandJia,2009;Canizaresetal.,2006;Girodsetal.,2009;Mukherjeeetal.,2007;Nevskaiaetal.,1999).Amongallthoseadsorbentmaterialsaforemen-tioned,activatedcarbonisthemostpopularabsorbentthatwasusedduetoitsadsorptionabilityforrelativelylow-molec-ular-weightorganiccompounds(Da˛browskietal.2005).Packed-bedsystemsarewidelyusedinadsorptionofwatervapor,organicsolventandsometoxicgases.Asimplepacked-bedsystemconsistsofasinglecolumnloadedwithaparticulartypeofadsorbent.Inasinglepacked-bedsystem,suitabletypeofadsorbentisselectedforspecificadsorbateinordertoobtainhighremovalefficiencyforparticularadsorbate.Forexample,activatedcarbonisusuallyusedforadsorptionofoilandorganicsolvent,meanwhilesilicagelandmolecularsievesarecommonlyusedforadsorptionofwatervapor(Sanetal.1998).Inthisstudy,dynamicsimulationoftheadsorptionprocesswascarriedoutbyusingAspenAdsorptionV7.1program(AspenOne,2009).MaterialSafetyDataSheetofOccupa-tionalSafetyandHealthAdministration(OSHA)PermissibleExposureLimit(PEL)forphenolwas19mg/l,whichisequiv-alentto2.0189·107mol/l(CrowlandLouvar,2002).Thus,fewimportantfactorssuchascolumnheight,particlediameterofadsorbent,andinletfeedwaterflowrateofcontaminatedwaterwerevariedandstudiedbysimulatingtheestimatedmechanismofphenoladsorptioninsinglepackedbedcolumnfilledwithspecifiedactivatedcarbonparticlesbyreasonabletheoreticalassumptionssuchaskineticmodel,materialbal-ance,isotherm,andheatassumptionwithinthesimulation
