Chapter20:WritingaParagraph:GeneratingIdeasThoughtLinesThefirststepsinthewritingprocessarethemostcrucialfordevelopingawell-writtenunifiedparagraph.ThesestepsarecalledThoughtLines.Takingthetimetodevelopandfocusyourideaswillensuregoodwriting.Ideasforwritingcanbedevelopedinthreebasicways:freewriting,brainstorming,andjournaling.Eachtechniquehelpsyougenerateideasonabroadtopic.Thoseideascanbecomethespecificideayouwanttodevelopintoaparagraph.Onceyouhavegeneratedideas,theycanbeorganizedbygroupingtheideasinyourlistandthenlabelingeachgrouporbycreatingamaporclusterofrelatedideas.Onceyouhaveevaluatedyourgroupsofideas,youcandevelopatopicsentencethatreflectsthepointyouwanttomakeaboutyourideas.Atopicsentenceisasinglesentencethatconveysthemainideayouwanttomake.Yourparagraphwillthenusemanyofthedetailsyougeneratedthroughyourbrainstormingtosupportthetopicsentence.Agoodtopicsentencewillbenarrowenoughtobethoroughlysupportedinasingleparagraph,butnotsonarrowthatthereisnotenoughideatosupport.Agoodtopicsentencealsoisn`tsobroadthatitcan`tbethoroughlysupportedinasingleparagraph.Alwaysremember-onlyoneideaineachparagraph.Onceyouhavecompletedthesesteps,thethoughtlines,youwillbereadyforthenextstepinthewritingprocess-outlines.
