广西师范大学硕士学位论文功能理论在工程项目翻译中的应用姓名：蒋优平申请学位级别：硕士专业：英语语言文学指导教师：钟国仕20070401iii20042080.ivFunctionalisminEngineeringProjectTranslationAuthor:JiangYoupingSupervisor:ZhongGuoshiGrade:2004Major:EnglishLanguageandLiteratureSpecialty:ESPAbstractCooperationintheareaofengineeringtechnologyandmanagementisoneofthemostimportantandcommonphenomenaininternationalcollaboration.Sino-foreigncooperationinthisareastartedaquitelongtimeagoandwiththefasteconomicalgrowthandafurtheropenpolicyitwillbemoreandmorecomprehensive.NowadaysinChina,thosesignificantengineeringprojectsthatarecharacterizedwithahugecapitalinvestment,complextechnology,highriskandlongconstructionterm,generallygoforaninternationalopeninvitationtobidsoastointroduceforeignadvancedtechnology,managementmethodsandfinancialsupport.Needlesstosay,translationplaysanimportantroleininternationalcollaboration;however,duetothefactthatsourcetextsofengineeringprojecttranslation(EPT)arefeaturedwithabroadvariety,tremendousquantityofinformation,strongspecialty,beingpurpose-orientedandtime-specific,traditionaltranslationtheories,whichcameintoformonthebasisofpracticaltranslationofclassiclectionsandliteratureworks,andwhicharebasicallysource-orientedandlinguisticandtendtosuggesttranslationstrategiesandmethodsuponanalysisongrammatical,semanticorotherlinguisticfeaturesofthesourcetext,arefoundimpotenttoguidepracticaloperationinEPTandevenputthetranslatorintodilemmas.Contrarytotraditionaltheories,Functionalismof“GermanSchool”,whichrosein1980s,istargettext-oriented,viewingthepurposeorfunction,i.e.Skoposasthetopruleguidingthetranslationaction,stressingtheimportantrolesofthetranslatorandotherparticipants,entitlingthetranslatortoadoptingflexiblestrategiesormethodsinachievingthefunctionofthetargettext.Asitprovidestranslatorswithapplicabletheoreticalbasisforsolvingmanyproblemswhichcannotbetackledbytraditionaltheoriesandwithconfidenceandimprovementofprofessionalskillsaswell,Functionalismshouldbefamiliarizedbymorescholarsandpractitionersandpopularizedwithitsapplication.ThisthesispurportstointroduceFunctionalismanddemonstrateitsapplicationinengineeringprojecttranslation.Itconsistsoffourparts.Chapter1brieflyoutlinesthepresentsituationandtendencyofSino-foreigncooperationintheareaofengineeringtechnologyandmanagement,andtheimportanceoftranslationinEP.Meanwhileitpointsouttheinsufficiencyoftraditionaltheories,theapplicabilityofFunctionalisminEPT,thesignificanceofthisstudyvandtheauthor’sintentionaswell;Chapter2goeswithahistoricoverviewofFunctionalismandadetailedintroductiontoitstwofundamentaltheories,i.e.thetheoryoftranslationactionandSkopostheorie;Chapter3,thekeypartofthisthesis,dealswiththeapplicationofFunctionalismtoEPT,beginningwithexplanationsofthebasicaspectsofEP,translator’sduty,characteristicsofsourcetexts,adoptionofstrategiesandmethods,endingwithexamplesforpracticaloperationinEPT;Chapter4makesconclusivecommentsonadvantagesanddisadvantagesofFunctionalismandtraditionaltheoriesinEPTandfinallysuggeststhequalificationforanEPtranslator.KeyWords:FunctionalismEngineeringProjectTranslationTranslationStrategiesandMethods.iiAcknowledgementsMyheartfeltgratitudeisfirstextendedtoProfessorZhongGuoshi,asmysupervisor,whohasprovidedmewithhisinvaluableinstructionsandencouragementthatbenefitmetosuchanextentthatIcouldnothavecompletedthisthesiswithoutsuch.IalsoexpressmysincerethankstoProfessorYuanBinyeforhislecturesthathaverousedmygreatinterestinFunctionalismoftranslation,andfurtherattractmetostartmyresearchintherelatedfield;andmeanwhile,ImustthankProfessorBaiJingze,ProfessorZhangXianglinandProfessorZhouLiangren,whohaveenlightenedmeintheirpreciouslectureswiththeirprofoundknowledgeandexperienceseitherintranslationtheoriesorinpracticalskillsorboth.Mygratitudethengoestomywifeandson,who,byhavingsacrificedsomanyshould-behappytimeswhenwewouldhavesharedtogether,gavemetheirfullsupportandencouragementduringthecourseofmyacademicresearch.1Chapter1IntroductionWiththeaccelerationofworldeconomicglobalizationandfastgrowthofChina’seconomy,especiallywithWTOentry,Sino-foreigncooperationinvariousfieldshasreachedahistorichighlevel.Ontheonehand,Chinahasbecomea“worldfactory”,wheretremendousmarketsandpotentialattractagreatmanyforeigninvestorsfromallovertheworldtoinvestinvariousfields,suchasenergy,transportation,telecommunication,utilitiesandotherinfrastructuresetc.bytakingadvantageoftheirownadvancedtechnology,managementconceptsandmethods,aswellasabundantinexpensivelaborandrawmaterialsinChina;ontheotherhand,moreandmoreChineseenterprisesareexpandingtheirbusinessoverseas,amongthemaregiantstate-ownedcorporations,whichareusuallycarryingoutournationaleconomicandpoliticalstrategies,suchasinenergyindustry.Sino-foreigncooperationandexchangeinthefieldofengineeringtechnologyandmanagementmaybetheearliestandmostcommonphenomenaamongallinternationalcollaborationsbetweenChinaandoutsideworld,whichisinlinewithournation’srealitythatChinaisstilladevelopingcountrywhoisinneedofthesupportofadvancedscienceandtechnologyfromthedevelopedcountries,speciallyneedfinancialandman
