I.J.InformationTechnologyandComputerScience,2013,03,21-28PublishedOnlineFebruary2013inMECS()DOI:10.5815/ijitcs.2013.03.03Copyright©2013MECSI.J.InformationTechnologyandComputerScience,2013,03,21-28AMobile-BasedComputerControllerviaAndroidTechnologySiew-ChinChongMultimediaUniversity/FacultyofInformationScience&Technology,Melaka,MalaysiaEmail:[e-mail]-YingChongMultimediaUniversity/FacultyofInformationScience&Technology,Melaka,MalaysiaEmail:[e-mail]MultimediaUniversity/FacultyofInformationScience&Technology,Melaka,MalaysiaEmail:[e-mail]—Theevolutionofmobiledevices,especiallyinthesemoderndays,hasdrasticallychangedthefaceofbusiness.Amobilephonedeviceisoftenexpectedtooffercomputer-likefunctionality.Thesedays,mostmobilephoneusersfinditsomehowinconvenienttodosometasksusingtheircomputers.Mostindividualsprefertochangepositionswhilesitting,stretching,andalsofeelingabitmorecomfortablewhenbrowsingthroughtheircomputers.Itcanbeveryimpracticaltobeconfinedtothekeyboardandmousewhilesitting5or10feetfromthecomputer.Hence,theproposedapplicationismeanttoturnthehandphoneintoawirelesskeyboardandmousewithatouch-pad,throughthewirelessnetwork.Thisprototypeisproventobeabletoperformmostoftheactionsanormalcomputerkeyboardandmousecanperform.IndexTerms—Touchpad,Keypad,Multi-Scrolling,PinchGestureI.IntroductionInrecentyears,therehasbeenaphenomenalgrowthinmobileorhandheldcomputingandcommunicationdevicessuchasmobilephones,personaldigitalassistants,personalmediaplayersandsoon[1].Theevolutionofmobiledevices,especiallyinthesemoderndays,hasdrasticallychangedthefaceofbusiness.Itisnowcurrentlyattainablewithourknowledgeinfrastructure,andpowerfulmobiledevices,forsomeindividualsindoingmostoftheirworkoutsidetheworkplace[2].Withtheemergenceofthemobilephonesofnowadays,particularlyAppleiPhone,Android,HTCandBlackberryproducts,individualscanworknearlyanywhere.Alotofmobileapplicationshavetakencontroloverthemobilemarkettrend[2][3].Everyday,newmobileapplicationsaredevelopedwithitsowncompatibility,makingsureitservespurposefullytoaparticularmobilephonemodelanditsspecifications.Nowadays,besidesusingcomputersforworkingpurpose,mostoftheusersusetheircomputersforentertainmentpurposessuchaswatchingamovie,sharingphotos,browsingmusicorplayinggames.Sittingonaparticularspotisneverafunespeciallywhenviewinganentertainingmedia.Itcanbeveryimpracticaltobeconfinedtothekeyboardandmousewhilesitting5or10feetfromthecomputer.Therefore,remotecontrolsorwirelessmouseandkeyboardsarealsoavailableforcomputerstosolvethelimitationmentionedabove.However,theseremotecontrolsorwirelesskeyboardandmousehaveafixedsetofbuttonsattachedtothedeviceithasbeenattachedanddesignedtocontrol.Afixeddistancefromthecomputerwouldbeanotherconcernofusingtheexistingremotecontrolsorwirelesskeyboardandmouse.Whensittingfarfromthecomputer,theuserisunabletoviewclearlytheitemsonthecomputerscreen,whichwouldlimitthemincontrollingthecomputer.Therestofthepaperisorganizedasfollows.InSection2,someoftherelatedAndroidapplicationsarebrieflyreviewed.TheproposedsystemdesignisdiscussedinSection3.InSection4,theimplementationprocessoftheproposedsystemisexplained.ThetestingscenarioandresultarereportedinSection5andfinally,theconclusionisgiveninSection6.II.RelatedIssuesAndroidplatformhasmadeeverythingsoeasyandachievableinitsenvironment.InlinewitharesearchfromGartner[4],Androidispoisedtobecomethesecondworldwidemobileoperatingsystembytheendofyear2011.Therehavebeenlotsofcompetitionsin22AMobile-BasedComputerControllerviaAndroidTechnologyCopyright©2013MECSI.J.InformationTechnologyandComputerScience,2013,03,21-28theAndroidMarket.ThedevelopmentandimprovementofanexistingAndroidinnovationhasbecomeausualthingnowintheAndroidEnvironment.EveryAndroiddeveloperwantstodesignorcreateauniqueapplicationthathasalotofimprovementandadvancementtowardstheexistingapplications.Adeveloperwhohasjustbuiltanapplicationmightendupseeingmoreoftheapplicationjustinacoupleofmonths.DuetothefactthatAndroidisanopensource,ithasinevitablygivenAndroiddevelopersthechancetoimproveexistingworkandaswellcreatewhatiscurrentlyinvokeinthemarkettrend.Asregardstothisproject’saim,therehavebeenexistingworksrelatedtotheproposedapplicationwhichhasbeeninthemarketsincelastandearlierthisyear.BelowaresomeoftherelatedexistingAndroidRemoteapplications,withabriefoutlinesoftheirspecifications.a.Gmote[5]:ThisisanAndroidremoteapplicationthathasbeenusedtocontrolaVideoLanClient(alsoknownasVLC)mediaplayer,withbasicoptionssuchasplay,pause,stop,forwardtrackandbackwardtrack.Itsadvancedfeatureisthefilebrowserthatallowsitusertopickandchoosewhattoplayandalsoarecentlyaddedfeatureofbeingabletoplaysomeofthemediafilesdirectlyonthephoneasopposedtowatchingitonthecomputer.However,thisremoteapplicationhasitslimitationincontrollingoneprogram.b.myRemote[6]:Thisapplicationisverysimpleandeasytouse,easytosetup,anditisanexcellentcontrolforHomeTheaterPC(alsoknownasHTPC).ThishasbeenratedthebestRemotecontrolforW
