IPC/EIAJ-STD-001DRequirementsforSolderedElectricalandElectronicAssembliesORIGINALFORMAT4thWorkingDraftFebruary2004IPC/EIAJ-STD-001D4thWorkingDraftFebruary200421SCOPEThisstandardprescribespracticesandrequirementsforthemanufactureofsolderedelectricalandelectronicassemblies.Historically,electronicassembly(soldering)standardscontainedamorecomprehensivetutorialaddressingprinciplesandtechniques.Foramorecompleteunderstandingofthisdocument’srecommendationsandrequirements,onemayusethisdocumentinconjunctionwithIPC-HDBK-001andIPC-A-610.WhenIPC/EIAJ-STD-001iscitedorrequiredbycontract,therequirementsofIPC-A-610donotapplyunlessseparatelyorspecificallyrequired.WhenIPC-A-610iscitedalongwithIPC/EIAJ-STD-001,theorderofprecedenceistobedefinedintheprocurementdocuments.1.1PurposeThisstandarddescribesmaterials,methodsandacceptancecriteriaforproducingsolderedelectricalandelectronicassemblies.Theintentofthisdocumentistorelyonprocesscontrolmethodologytoensureconsistentqualitylevelsduringthemanufactureofproducts.Itisnottheintentofthisstandardtoexcludeanyprocedureforcomponentplacementorforapplyingfluxandsolderusedtomaketheelectricalconnection.Themethodsusedshall(D1D2D3)producecompletedsolderjointsconformingtotheacceptabilityrequirementsdescribedinthisstandard.Therequirementsforassembly,soldering,solderedconnections,cleaning,coating/encapsulation,rework,andverificationaredefinedingeneralterms.1.2ClassificationThisstandardrecognizesthatelectricalandelectronicassembliesaresubjecttoclassificationsbyintendedend-itemuse.Threegeneralend-productclasseshavebeenestablishedtoreflectdifferencesinproducibility,complexity,functionalperformancerequirements,andverification(inspection/test)frequency.Itshouldberecognizedthattheremaybeoverlapsofequipmentbetweenclasses.Theuser(see3.2.11)isresponsiblefordefiningtheproductclass.Theproductclassshouldbestatedintheprocurementdocumentationpackage.CLASS1GeneralElectronicProductsIncludesproductssuitableforapplicationswherethemajorrequirementisfunctionofthecompletedassembly.CLASS2DedicatedServiceElectronicProductsIncludesproductswherecontinuedperformanceandextendedlifeisrequired,andforwhichuninterruptedserviceisdesiredbutnotcritical.Typicallytheend-useenvironmentwouldnotcausefailures.CLASS3HighPerformanceElectronicProductsIncludesproductswherecontinuedhighperformanceorperformance-on-demandiscritical,equipmentdowntimecannotbetolerated,end-useenvironmentmaybeuncommonlyharsh,andtheequipmentmustfunctionwhenrequired,suchaslifesupportorothercriticalsystems.1.3MeasurementUnitsandApplicationsAlldimensionsandtolerances,aswellasotherformsofmeasurement(temperature,weight,etc.)inthisstandardareexpressedinSI(SystemInternational)units(withImperialEnglishequivalentdimensionsprovidedinbrackets).Dimensionsandtolerancesusemillimetersasthemainformofdimensionalexpression;micrometersareusedwhentheprecisionrequiredmakesmillimeterstoocumbersome.Celsiusisusedtoexpresstemperature.Weightisexpressedingrams.1.3.1VerificationofDimensionsActualmeasurementofspecificpartmountingandsolderfilletdimensionsanddeterminationofpercentagesarenotrequiredexceptforrefereepurposes.Forthepurposesofdeterminingconformancetothisspecification,allspecifiedlimitsinthisstandardareabsolutelimitsasdefinedinASTME29.1.4DefinitionofRequirementsThewordshallisusedthroughoutthisdocumentwheneverarequirementisintendedtoexpressaprovisionthatisbinding.Wherethewordshallleadstoahardwaredefectforatleastoneclass,therequirementsforeachclassareannotatedintextboxeslocatedadjacenttothatoccurrenceinthetext.TheseboxesaresummarizedinAppendixA.AppendixAidentifieseachlistedconditionforeachclassaseither‘‘Defect,’’‘‘ProcessIndicator,’’‘‘Acceptable,’’or‘‘NoRequirementSpecified.’’IncaseofadiscrepancybetweenrequirementsinthetextboxesandAppendixA,requirementslistedinthetextboxestakeprecedence.Linedrawingsandillustrationsaredepictedhereintoassistintheinterpretationofthewrittenrequirementsofthisstandard.Whentablesorfiguresprovidedetailsoftherequirements,thetablesorfigurestakeprecedenceoverthetextofthisstandard.IPC-HDBK-001,acompaniondocumenttothisspecification,containsvaluableexplanatoryandtutorialinformationcompiledbyIPCTechnicalCommitteesthatisrelativetothisspecification.AlthoughtheHandbookisnotapartofthisspecification,whenthereisIPC/EIAJ-STD-001D4thWorkingDraftFebruary20043confusionoverthespecificationverbiage,thereaderisreferredtotheHandbookforassistance.Note:Inpreviousrevisionsofthisstandard,thewords‘‘must’’and‘‘shall’’hadspecialmeanings.Inthisrevision(IPC/EIAJ-STD-001C),theword‘‘shall’’hasnospecialmeaningbeyondthatcommonlyusedinotherIPCstandardsasstatedabove.1.4.1HardwareDefectsandProcessIndicatorsHardwarecharacteristicsorconditionsthatdonotconformtotherequirementsofthisspecificationthataredetectablebyinspectionoranalysisareclassifiedaseitherhardwaredefectsorhardwareprocessindicators.Hardwaredefectslistedintheapplicabletextboxesshallbeidentifiedandshallbedispositioned,e.g.,rework,scrap,useasis,repair.Notallprocessindicatorsspecifiedbythisstandardarelistedinthetextboxes.Hardwareprocessindic
