AnewglowdischargesectorfieldmassspectrometerfortheanalysisofhighpuritymetalsandalloysMeikeHamester,SongYin*,JoachimHinrichsandLotharRottmannThermoElectron,AdvancedMassSpectrometry,Hanna-KunathStrasse11,28199Bremen,GermanySongYin,ThermoElectronShanghai,Building6,No.27XinJinqiaoRd.,ShanghaiChina201206Glowdischargemassspectrometryisestablishedasthehigh-endtoolforthesolidanalysisofhighpuritymetals.However,thereareseveraldrawbacksofthetechniquemainlyduethesectorfieldanalyzercurrentlyusedforthistechnology.Oldergenerationsofsectorfieldanalyzersuffermainlyfromslowscan-speed,weakmassstabilityandcomplexGDsourceswhichresultsinverylowsamplethroughputanddifficultoperation.ThepresentationwillintroduceanewGD-MSinstrumentusingahighthroughputGlowDischargesourcecombinedwithamodernsectorfieldmassspectrometer.Combinationofmagneticandelectricscantechniquesdeliverdutycyclesupto99%andmassstabilitycouldbeprovedwith25ppmformonths.Thecombinationofa“fastflow”GDsourceforefficientsputteringwiththehighscanspeedofthesectorfieldanalyzerofferstheabilitytoanalyze60elementsin10minutes.Thenewlydevelopeddetectorenablesmeasuringalineardynamicrangeofmorethan12ordersofmagnitude:forelementaldeterminationsfrompptuptomatrixelementsinasingleanalysis.ThepresentationwilldescribethetechnicalconceptofthenewspectrometerFinniganELEMENTGDanddemonstrateitsabilitiesondifferentapplications,suchashighpuritymetalsandalloys.
