323Nat’lHighwayTrafficSafetyAdmin.,DOT§571.111morethanonenon-pneumaticsparetireinuseatthesametime.S8.Non-PneumaticRimsandWheelCenterMembersS8.1Non-PneumaticRimRequire-ments.Eachnon-pneumaticrimthatispartofaseparablenon-pneumaticsparetireassemblyshallbecon-structedtothedimensionsofanon-pneumaticrimthatislistedpursuanttoS4.4of§571.129forusewiththenon-pneumatictire,designatedbyitsnon-pneumatictireidentificationcode,withwhichthevehicleisequipped.S8.2WheelCenterMemberRequire-ments.Eachwheelcentermemberthatispartofaseparablenon-pneumaticsparetireassemblyshallbecon-structedtothedimensionsofawheelcentermemberthatislistedpursuanttoS4.4of§571.129forusewiththenon-pneumatictire,designatedbyitsnon-pneumatictireidentificationcode,withwhichthevehicleisequipped.[36FR22902,Dec.2,1971,asamendedat37FR23727,Nov.8,1972;40FR5530,Feb.6,1975;47FR36183,Aug.19,1982;49FR38612,Oct.1,1984;55FR29589,July20,1990;56FR19311,Apr.26,1991;60FR13643,Mar.14,1995]§571.111StandardNo.111;Rearviewmirrors.S1.Scope.Thisstandardspecifiesre-quirementsfortheperformanceandlo-cationofrearviewmirrors.S2.Purpose.Thepurposeofthisstandardistoreducethenumberofdeathsandinjuriesthatoccurwhenthedriverofamotorvehicledoesnothaveaclearandreasonablyunob-structedviewtotherear.S3.Application.Thisstandardappliestopassengercars,multipurposepas-sengervehicles,trucks,buses,schoolbusesandmotorcycles.S4.Definitions.Convexmirrormeansamirrorhavingacurvedreflectivesurfacewhoseshapeisthesameasthatoftheexteriorsur-faceofasectionofasphere.Effectivemirrorsurfacemeansthepor-tionsofamirrorthatreflectimages,excludingthemirrorrimormountingbrackets.Unitmagnificationmirrormeansaplaneorflatmirrorwithareflectivesurfacethroughwhichtheangularheightandwidthoftheimageofanob-jectisequaltotheangularheightandwidthoftheobjectwhenvieweddi-rectlyatthesamedistanceexceptforflawsthatdonotexceednormalmanu-facturingtolerances.Forthepurposesofthisregulationaprismaticday-nightadjustmentrearviewmirroroneofwhosepositionsprovidesunitmag-nificationisconsideredaunitmag-nificationmirror.S5.Requirementsforpassengercars.S5.1Insiderearviewmirror.Eachpas-sengercarshallhaveaninsiderear-viewmirrorofunitmagnification.S5.1.1Fieldofview.Exceptaspro-videdinS5.3,themirrorshallprovideafieldofviewwithanincludedhori-zontalanglemeasuredfromthepro-jectedeyepointofatleast20degrees,andasufficientverticalangletopro-videaviewofalevelroadsurfaceex-tendingtothehorizonbeginningatapointnotgreaterthan61mtotherearofthevehiclewhenthevehicleisoccu-piedbythedriverandfourpassengersorthedesignatedoccupantcapacity,ifless,basedonanaverageoccupantweightof68kg.Thelineofsightmaybepartiallyobscuredbyseatedoccu-pantsorbyheadrestraints.Theloca-tionofthedriver’seyereferencepointsshallbethoseestablishedinMotorVe-hicleSafetyStandardNo.104(§571.104)oranominallocationappropriateforany95thpercentilemaledriver.S5.1.2Mounting.Themirrormount-ingshallprovideastablesupportforthemirror,andshallprovideformirroradjustmentbytiltinginboththehori-zontalandverticaldirections.Ifthemirrorisintheheadimpactarea,themountingshalldeflect,collapseorbreakawaywithoutleavingsharpedgeswhenthereflectivesurfaceofthemirrorissubjectedtoaforceof400Ninanyforwarddirectionthatisnotmorethan45°fromtheforwardlongi-tudinaldirection.S5.2Outsiderearviewmirror—driver’sside.S5.2.1Fieldofview.Eachpassengercarshallhaveanoutsidemirrorofunitmagnification.Themirrorshallpro-videthedriveraviewofalevelroadsurfaceextendingtothehorizonfromaline,perpendiculartoalongitudinalplanetangenttothedriver’ssideofthevehicleatthewidestpoint,extending2.4moutfromthetangentplane10.7mbehindthedriver’seyes,withtheseatVerDate0ct31200214:20Dec13,2002Jkt197204PO00000Frm00323Fmt8010Sfmt8002Y:\SGML\197204T.XXX197204T32449CFRCh.V(10–1–02Edition)§571.111intherearmostposition.Thelineofsightmaybepartiallyobscuredbyrearbodyorfendercontours.Thelocationofthedriver’seyereferencepointsshallbethoseestablishedinMotorVe-hicleSafetyStandardNo.104(§571.104)oranominallocationappropriateforany95thpercentilemaledriver.S5.2.2Mounting.Themirrormount-ingshallprovideastablesupportforthemirror,andneitherthemirrornorthemountingshallprotrudefartherthanthewidestpartofthevehiclebodyexcepttotheextentnecessarytoproduceafieldofviewmeetingorex-ceedingtherequirementsofS5.2.1.Themirrorshallnotbeobscuredbytheunwipedportionofthewindshield,andshallbeadjustablebytiltinginbothhorizontalandverticaldirectionsfromthedriver’sseatedposition.Themirrorandmountingshallbefreeofsharppointsoredgesthatcouldcontributetopedestrianinjury.S5.3Outsiderearviewmirrorpas-senger’sside.EachpassengercarwhoseinsiderearviewmirrordoesnotmeetthefieldofviewrequirementsofS5.1.1shallhaveanoutsidemirrorofunitmagnificationoraconvexmirrorin-stalledonthepassenger’sside.Themirrormountingshallprovideastablesupportandbefreeofsharppointsoredgesthatcouldcontributetopedes-trianinjury.Themirrorneednotbeadjustablefromthedriver’sseatbutshallbecapableofadjustmentbytilt-inginbothhorizontalandverticaldi-rections.S5.4Convexmirrorrequirements.EachmotorvehicleusingaconvexmirrortomeettherequirementsofS5.3shall
