46049CFRCh.V(10–1–06Edition)§571.124§571.124StandardNo.124;Accel-eratorcontrolsystems.S1.Scope.Thisstandardestablishesrequirementsforthereturnofavehi-cle’sthrottletotheidlepositionwhenthedriverremovestheactuatingforcefromtheacceleratorcontrol,orintheeventofaseveranceordisconnectionintheacceleratorcontrolsystem.S2.Purpose.Thepurposeofthisstandardistoreducedeathsandinju-riesresultingfromengineoverspeedcausedbymalfunctionsintheaccel-eratorcontrolsystem.S3.Application.Thisstandardappliestopassengercars,multi-purposepas-sengervehicles,trucks,andbuses.S4.Definitions.S4.1Driver-operatedacceleratorcon-trolsystemmeansallvehiclecompo-nents,exceptthefuelmeteringdevice,thatregulateenginespeedindirectre-sponsetomovementofthedriver-oper-atedcontrolandthatreturnthethrot-tletotheidlepositionuponreleaseoftheactuatingforce.Fuelmeteringdevicemeansthecarbu-retor,orinthecaseofcertainenginesthefuelinjector,fueldistributororfuelinjectionpump.Throttlemeansthecomponentofthefuelmeteringdevicethatconnectstothedriver-operatedacceleratorcontrolsystemandthatbyinputfromthedriver-operatedacceleratorcontrolsystemcontrolstheenginespeed.Idlepositionmeansthepositionofthethrottleatwhichitfirstcomesincon-tactwithanengineidlespeedcontrolappropriateforexistingconditionsac-cordingtothemanufacturers’rec-ommendations.Theseconditionsin-clude,butarenotlimitedto,enginespeedadjustmentsforcoldengine,airconditioning,andemissioncontrol,andtheuseofthrottlesettingdevices.Ambienttemperaturemeansthesur-roundingairtemperature,atadistancesuchthatitisnotsignificantlyaf-fectedbyheatfromthevehicleundertest.S4.2Inthecaseofvehiclespoweredbyelectricmotors,thewordsthrottleandidlerefertothemotorspeedcon-trollerandmotorshutdown,respec-tively.S5.Requirements.Thevehicleshallmeetthefollowingrequirementswhentheengineisrunningunderanyloadcondition,andatanyambienttem-peraturebetween¥40degreesCelsiusand+52degreesCelsiusafter12hoursofconditioningatanytemperaturewithinthatrange.S5.1ThereshallbeatleasttwosourcesofenergycapableofreturningthethrottletotheidlepositionwithinthetimelimitspecifiedbyS5.3fromanyacceleratorpositionorspeedwhen-everthedriverremovestheopposingactuatingforce.Intheeventoffailureofonesourceofenergybyasinglesev-eranceordisconnection,thethrottleshallreturntotheidlepositionwithinthetimelimitsspecifiedbyS5.3,fromanyacceleratorpositionorspeedwhen-everthedriverremovestheopposingactuatingforce.S5.2Thethrottleshallreturntotheidlepositionfromanyacceleratorposi-tionoranyspeedofwhichtheengineiscapablewheneveranyonecomponentoftheacceleratorcontrolsystemisdisconnectedorseveredatasinglepoint.ThereturntoidleshalloccurwithinthetimelimitspecifiedbyS5.3,measuredeitherfromthetimeofsev-eranceordisconnectionorfromthefirstremovaloftheopposingactuatingforcebythedriver.S5.3Exceptasprovidedbelow,max-imumtimetoreturntoidlepositionshallbe1secondforvehiclesof4536kilogramsorlessGVWR,and2secondsforvehiclesofmorethan4536kilo-gramsGVWR.Maximumtimetore-turntoidlepositionshallbe3secondsforanyvehiclethatisexposedtoambi-entairat¥18degreesCelsiusto¥40degreesCelsiusduringthetestorforanyportionofthe12-hourconditioningperiod.[38FR2980,Jan.31,1973;asamendedat60FR13645,Mar.14,1995]§571.125StandardNo.125;Warningdevices.S1.Scope.Thisstandardestablishesrequirementsfordevices,withoutself-containedenergysources,thatarede-signedtobecarriedinmotorvehiclesandusedtowarnapproachingtrafficofthepresenceofastoppedvehicle,ex-ceptfordevicesdesignedtobeperma-nentlyaffixedtothevehicle.VerDateAug31200511:52Nov06,2006Jkt208213PO00000Frm00470Fmt8010Sfmt8010Y:\SGML\208213.XXX208213
