__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________SAETechnicalStandardsBoardRulesprovidethat:“ThisreportispublishedbySAEtoadvancethestateoftechnicalandengineeringsciences.Theuseofthisreportisentirelyvoluntary,anditsapplicabilityandsuitabilityforanyparticularuse,includinganypatentinfringementarisingtherefrom,isthesoleresponsibilityoftheuser.”SAEreviewseachtechnicalreportatleasteveryfiveyearsatwhichtimeitmaybereaffirmed,revised,orcancelled.SAEinvitesyourwrittencommentsandsuggestions.Copyright©2009SAEInternationalAllrightsreserved.Nopartofthispublicationmaybereproduced,storedinaretrievalsystemortransmitted,inanyformorbyanymeans,electronic,mechanical,photocopying,recording,orotherwise,withoutthepriorwrittenpermissionofSAE.TOPLACEADOCUMENTORDER:Tel:877-606-7323(insideUSAandCanada)Tel:724-776-4970(outsideUSA)Fax:724-776-0790Email:CustomerService@sae.orgSAEWEBADDRESS:(R)MotorVehicleDimensionsRATIONALEThe2009revisionofSAEJ1100representsasubstantialoverhaulofitscontents.Specifically,dimensionproceduresanddefinitionshavebeen:•harmonizedwiththeGlobalCarmanufacturer’sInformationExchange(GCIE),•coordinatedwithrevisionstootherSAEhumanaccommodationstandards,•synchronizedwithrelateddefinitionspublishedbytheInternationalStandardsOrganization(ISO),includingtheuseofHPM-II,•formalizedwithcertainregulatoryproceduresdefinedbytheUnitedStates(U.S.)EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),and•madeconsistentwithsomedefinitionsfoundintheU.S.CodeofFederalRegulationsbytheNationalHighwayTrafficSafetyAdministration(NHTSA).ThisrevisionreinstatessomepreviouslydeletedSAEJ1100dimensionsaswellassomeolderversionsofSAEJ1100dimensionaldefinitions(e.g.W27).Additionally,manynewdefinitions,dimensions,andfigureswereadopted.Thedocumentstructurewassubsequentlyreorganizedforbetterconsistencyandtoaccommodatethenumberofchanges.Mostnotably,cargorelateddimensionswerecombinedwhetherornottheywereusedinaVolumeIndex,,e.g.L505–PickupBodyLengthatFloorwasmovedfromtheExteriorDimensions–LengthTabletotheCargoDimensions–LengthTable.Theuseofsecondarysuffixeswasexpandedtomorelogicallyconsolidatedimensioncodes.ConsistentwiththeprevioustwoversionsofSAEJ1100,thelocationordesignatedseatingpositionisidentifiedbythefirstlevelsuffix.Thesecondlevelsuffixisusedtoindicateaconditionordirection.AdditionaldetailsareprovidedinSection4.Toassisttheuserinlocatinginformationofinterest,adetailedTableofContentswasadded.Contentwhichunderwentthemostsignificantchangeisdescribedbelow.Asinthepast,allground-relateddimensionsaretakennormaltothegroundplaneforanyloadingcondition.Thedefinitionswereeditoriallyrevisedtoclarifythispoint.SAEJ1100alsoreintroducesthe‘EPA-curb’loadingconditionanddescribesspecificdimensionstakenatthatload.Further,thedocumentprovidesnewdimensionsmeasuredatthemanufacturer’sdeclaredgrossvehicleweightrating,andalsoassimilatesthedimensionsfromthecancelledSAEJ689.SAEJ1100RevisedNOV2009Page2of127ThedefinitionofDesignatedSeatingPosition(3.3.8)reflectspendingchangestoFederalMotorVehicleSafetyStandards(FMVSS)forvehiclesmanufacturedonorafterSeptember1,2010.Relateddefinitionsforseatingsurface(3.3.17)andseatingsurfacewidth(33.3.19)wereadded,aswellasanewdimensionalmetric(SW26)forrecordingthetotalnumberofdesignatedseatingpositionsineachrowofseats.Themethodforlocatingthefloorreferencepoint(3.5.7)wasmodifiedtoaccountfordifferencesbetweentheHPMdevicesandproceduresdescribedinSAEJ826andSAEJ4002.ThismeansthatSAEJ1100dimensionsareapplicabletoboth.Driverfootcontroldimensionswererevampedtoreflectacomponent-basednumberingsystemwhichisdescribedinSection6.ControlspacingdimensionsbasedonISO3409wereadopted.H-pointtravelpathdimensionswererevisedandthepointswhichdescribethetravelpathlimitsweredefinedinSection7.Thedimensionswerealsosuffixed(2,3,4,…)toallowthenaturalexpansionintosecondandsucceedingrowsofseating.DaylightOpening(DLO)wasreplacedwithDesignGlassOutline(DGO).SeveralregulateddimensionsuseordefineDaylightOpening,orDLO,thatweredifferentfromtheDLOdefinitionfoundinpriorversionsofSAEJ1100.DGOwascreatedtoreduceconfusionwiththeseotherdimensionsandprovideauniquemeasuredevoidofregulatoryinterpretation.TheX-planesectionfordefiningheadclearances(W27,W35,andH35)wasrevisedtoreflectthesideviewtopofcontourconsistentwiththehistoricalmethod.ItreplacestheuseofanX-planethroughtheheadcontourcentroid,firstintroducedin2002.Thischangeresultsinminimaldifferencesinmeasuresforthedriver,andyieldsequivalentresultsforsecondandsucceedingrowsofseatedoccupants.TheheadcontourcentroidandthesideviewtopofcontourforthesedesignatedseatingpositionsoccuronthesameX-plane.SeeSAEJ1052.Lastly,volumeindiceswereexpandedtoincludepassengervolumeandinteriorvolumemetricscongruentwithEPAandNHTSAdefinitions.SeeSection9andTables31-33.TABLEOFCONTENTS1.SCOPE......................................................................................................
